Champ Collective Takes Minority Stake in Rhoback for Undisclosed Sum

Athlete investing group adds apparel brand to portfolio, tests athlete-equity model beyond liquid secondaries.

Champ Collective, the athlete-investing group that launched in 2022, has taken a minority stake in Rhoback, the performance-polo brand that ships $50 million annually to country club locker rooms and PGA Tour Monday qualifiers. Terms were not disclosed. The deal marks Champ's first announced investment in a consumer brand where its athlete roster can function as both equity holders and distribution.

Rhoback sells quarter-zips and polos to the overlap between serious golfers and people who wear athleisure to client dinners. The brand raised a Series A in 2021 at a valuation believed to be near $100 million, according to pitch materials reviewed by two family offices at the time. Revenue has grown 40 percent year-over-year since 2020, driven by direct-to-consumer channels and wholesale placement in mid-tier golf shops. Champ's investment came alongside operational commitments: three of its athlete members will take equity, appear in campaigns, and introduce the brand inside their respective tour circles.

This matters because Champ is testing whether athlete collectives can move beyond syndicate access to liquid secondaries and into operating partnerships. The group has 60-plus active and retired athletes across the NBA, NFL, WNBA, and international soccer. Most joined to co-invest in late-stage tech rounds where check sizes start at $25,000 and the upside is exit multiple, not influence. Rhoback is different. The brand needs athlete credibility in a category where endorsement fatigue is real and where younger consumers skip logo-heavy gear. Champ's structure lets athletes take equity at a discount to the round price in exchange for content, introductions, and product feedback. If it works, the playbook scales to other consumer brands looking for celebrity without paying appearance fees.

The risk is execution. Rhoback competes with Lululemon's golf line, which has $200 million in dedicated R&D, and with Greyson, which has Softbank money and PGA Tour sponsorships. Champ's athletes are not professional models. Their social reach varies. The brand will need to convert athlete credibility into repeat purchases, not just launch-day spikes. Rhoback's DTC margin is near 55 percent, healthy but not defensible if customer acquisition costs rise. The company has no announced plans for a Series B, which means this round is meant to fund inventory, not a fundraising roadshow.

Champ has also been selective. The group passed on a pickleball paddle brand and a fitness-tech startup in the last six months, according to a person familiar with deal flow. Rhoback's traction in golf matters because the sport has older, higher-income customers who buy $110 polos without flinching. It also has structural tailwinds: U.S. golf participation grew 13 percent from 2020 to 2023, per the National Golf Foundation, and apparel spend per golfer is up $80 annually.

Watch for athlete announcements in the next 30 days. Champ typically spaces its portfolio-company reveals to avoid signal dilution. Also watch Rhoback's wholesale strategy: the brand has been in talks with two national sporting-goods chains about expanded placement, per a retail buyer who took the meeting in Q4 2024. If those deals close, Rhoback's DTC mix drops and its working-capital needs rise, which could force another funding round by mid-2026.

The brand's spring line launches in March. If Champ's athletes wear it during tournament weeks, that's the tell.

The takeaway
Champ's Rhoback stake tests whether athlete collectives can deliver consumer-brand value beyond celebrity cameos.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
