Chelsea have agreed to loan defender Axel Disasi to Crystal Palace for the remainder of the season, making him the third first-team player the club has placed elsewhere this January without collecting a fee. The move clears €120,000 in weekly wages from Todd Boehly's roster and gives Palace a right-footed center-back while Chadi Riad recovers from a knee procedure scheduled for late February.
Disasi joined Chelsea from Monaco in August 2023 for €45 million on a six-year contract. He has started eight Premier League matches this season, none since December 26th. The loan carries no option or obligation to buy. Palace will pay roughly 60% of his wages through June, leaving Chelsea with a €2.9 million liability for the half-season and Disasi with a shop window in front of the same mid-table directors who bought Marc Guéhi for €20 million in 2021.
The deal solves two problems quietly. Chelsea need to flatten their amortization curve before June 30th; every outbound loan reduces the active headcount against UEFA's 25-man squad registration limit and opens space for Kendry Páez, who arrives from Independiente del Valle in July. Palace need a short-term fix after watching Riad and Rob Holding struggle in back-three rotations that have conceded 38 goals in 23 matches. Disasi played 41 Ligue 1 games in Monaco's high line before Chelsea bought him; Oliver Glasner runs a similar system and has two months to decide whether Disasi is worth a summer bid or simply cover until academy prospect Caleb Kporha is ready.
Chelsea's loan strategy this window has now placed Disasi, Carney Chukwuemeka, and Ben Chilwell at other Premier League clubs while loaning Deivid Washington to Strasbourg and negotiating exits for Cesare Casadei and Harvey Vale. The club has paid out roughly €850 million in transfer fees since May 2022 and holds €1.2 billion in amortized contract value across 42 senior players. The math requires constant inventory turns. Disasi's loan saves €5.8 million in wages and preserves his book value at €33.75 million, which Chelsea can attempt to recoup in July if a Bundesliga club or Newcastle show interest.
Palace chairman Steve Parish has spent the last three windows building defensive depth through loans and free transfers while waiting for American owners John Textor and Josh Harris to approve capital injections that have yet to clear. The Disasi loan costs Palace roughly €3.5 million in wages and zero fee, a structure Parish has used before with Holding and Jeffrey Schlupp. It also keeps Palace in Boehly's Rolodex if Chelsea need to place Benoît Badiashile or Chilwell on short notice before the window closes January 31st.
Watch for Disasi's first appearance, likely against Brentford on February 1st if his medical clears this week. Chelsea still have four days to finalize exits for Casadei (Feyenoord, €12 million) and Chukwuemeka, whose Ipswich loan isStructured to become permanent in June if they survive relegation. Palace's next move depends on whether Riad's surgery reveals ligament damage; if it does, Parish will circle back to Chelsea for Badiashile before Friday's deadline.
