Nico Harrison Exits Dallas After Three Seasons, $850M Luka Timeline Now Open

The architect of Dallas's Finals run leaves mid-supermax cycle, six months before Kyrie's player option and a summer of Luka extension talks.

Nico Harrison, who rebuilt the Dallas Mavericks around Luka Dončić and traded for Kyrie Irving, has departed after three seasons as general manager. The franchise announced his exit Thursday without naming an interim replacement or timeline for a permanent hire. Harrison joined Dallas in June 2021 from Nike, where he ran North American basketball operations, and leaves with the roster $179M into the luxury tax for 2024-25.

He dealt Kristaps Porziņģis for Spencer Dinwiddie in February 2022, then moved five players for Irving the following February—a $126M gamble that delivered a Finals appearance 16 months later. The Mavericks went 38-44 in Year 1, 38-44 again in Year 2, then 50-32 last season before losing to Boston in five games. Harrison re-signed Irving to a three-year, $126M deal that summer, added Klay Thompson on a three-year, $50M contract, and watched Dallas start 22-20 before Thursday's announcement. His departure follows a Christmas Day loss to Minnesota and consecutive January defeats to Portland and Houston by a combined 41 points.

The timing matters because Dallas sits mid-cycle on two franchise bets. Dončić is eligible for a four-year, $346M supermax extension this summer; Irving holds a $43.4M player option in July. Thompson, 34, is shooting 36.1% from three on 9.2 attempts per game, his lowest percentage since 2016. The front office also owes the Knicks a top-ten protected 2025 first-round pick from the Irving trade, which conveys to a 2026 first if unmet, creating draft-capital friction for any new GM evaluating long-term roster construction. Whoever replaces Harrison inherits $173M in guaranteed salary for next season, the league's fourth-highest figure, with Dereck Lively II still on his rookie scale and no other controlled young assets of rotation value.

The succession picture is incomplete. Mark Cuban sold his majority stake to Miriam Adelson and her family in December 2023 for $3.5B, retaining basketball operations control under the sale structure. Patrick Dumont, Adelson's son-in-law, became governor; Cuban remains visible courtside. Harrison's exit six months into that transition suggests alignment issues or a new ownership group applying private-equity rigor to a front office that added $176M in committed salary since June. Dallas has no head of basketball operations above the GM role, so the search will either elevate an internal candidate—likely Michael Finley, VP of basketball ops—or bring in a president who then hires a GM. Either path takes 60-90 days in a normal cycle.

Watch whether Dallas targets a traditional GM with CBA mechanics expertise or a younger analytics VP, which would signal a rebuild around Lively rather than Luka's prime. Irving's option decision, due by June 29, will clarify payroll flexibility before any new hire takes the job. The Mavericks visit Phoenix on Sunday; Jason Kidd ran shootaround Friday without naming an interim front-office contact for roster questions.

Harrison's three-year tenure netted one Finals appearance and 128 wins, a 46.5% mark identical to Rick Carlisle's final three seasons. The difference: Carlisle left with cap space and draft picks. Harrison's successor inherits neither.

The takeaway
Dallas replaces its GM mid-supermax with **$346M** Luka talks looming, Irving's July option live, and no draft capital or young rotation pieces.
