Dallas Mavericks Promote Mike Schmitz to GM, Replace Nico Harrison Mid-Season

Front-office restructure under Cuban comes as Luka-Kyrie core enters championship window with luxury-tax clock ticking.

The Dallas Mavericks promoted Mike Schmitz to general manager, removing Nico Harrison from the role in a mid-season front-office restructure under owner Mark Cuban. Schmitz, 32, spent three seasons as assistant GM after joining from ESPN's draft analytics vertical in 2021. Harrison remains with the organization in an undefined capacity.

The promotion arrives with Dallas sitting 23-19 and sixth in the Western Conference, $14 million below the second luxury-tax apron but facing a $205 million payroll decision at Kyrie Irving's player option deadline in June. Schmitz inherits a roster construction challenge: Luka Dončić earns $43 million this season, Irving $37 million, and Klay Thompson $15.8 million in year one of a three-year deal signed last July. The Mavericks have one first-round pick in the next three drafts—their own in 2025, top-ten protected.

Schmitz's internal reputation centers on draft accuracy and international scouting pipelines. He evaluated Dereck Lively II before Dallas selected him 12th overall in 2023; Lively starts at center and anchors a top-eight defense. Schmitz also built relationships with agents representing European talent during his ESPN tenure, when he published 400-plus scouting reports and maintained a private database later acquired by front offices. League sources describe him as detail-oriented on medicals and contract mechanics, unusual for someone who entered the NBA from media three years ago.

Harrison's removal raises questions about decision authority on the Thompson signing, which surrendered cap flexibility for a 34-year-old shooter averaging 13.2 points on 41.5 percent from three. Thompson's contract includes a $17.9 million player option for 2026-27, limiting Dallas's ability to duck the tax without dealing foundational pieces. The Mavericks went 52-30 last season and reached the NBA Finals, losing to Boston in five games. They have not added a rotation player since Thompson arrived.

Cuban sold his majority stake to the Adelson and Dumont families for $3.5 billion in December 2023 but retained basketball operations control and a minority ownership position. The agreement gives him final say on personnel through the 2028-29 season, after which decision-making transfers to governor Patrick Dumont. Schmitz's promotion suggests Cuban wants a GM fluent in second-apron constraints and draft capital preservation, not the aggressive veteran acquisitions that defined Harrison's tenure. Harrison signed or traded for Spencer Dinwiddie, Christian Wood, Kyrie Irving, Daniel Gafford, P.J. Washington, and Thompson in 30 months.

The timing matters. Dallas faces a March 1 roster-guarantee deadline for two-way contracts and a February 6 trade deadline with limited flexibility. The Mavericks hold $6.2 million in tradeable salary outside their core five, making upgrades difficult without including Maxi Kleber or Naji Marshall. Rival executives expect Dallas to stand pat unless a wing defender becomes available for future draft considerations, which Schmitz controls.

Watch whether Schmitz hires a VP of basketball operations with agent relationships before the trade deadline, a move that would signal outbound calls on veterans. Irving's decision window opens June 29; if he declines his $43.1 million option, Dallas has only his Bird rights and the mid-level exception to rebuild the roster. Assistant GM Joel Kieffer, who overlapped with Schmitz since 2021, has worked under three GMs in four years.

Cuban installed a 32-year-old GM with three years of front-office experience to manage a $200 million roster and a five-year championship window. Schmitz's first call is whether to preserve assets or acquire help for a team that ranks 18th in opponent three-point percentage and has seven rotation players under contract past this season.

The takeaway
Dallas bets on draft analytics and apron navigation over veteran acquisition as Luka-Kyrie timeline compresses.

AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
