Jalen Duren's Extension Window Opens Into $120M Center Market Gap

Detroit's timeline puts Duren into restricted free agency just as Alperen Şengün, Evan Mobley reset the position's floor.

The Detroit Pistons can extend Jalen Duren starting July 2025. They won't. Extension talks require certainty about positional value, and the center market is about to recalibrate twice before Detroit needs to decide. Alperen Şengün's extension—somewhere near $30M annually—comes first. Evan Mobley's follows the year after, likely north of $35M. By summer 2026, when Duren hits restricted free agency, the Pistons will either match an offer sheet shaped by those comps or let a 21-year-old with 13.2 boards per game walk for cap space they've already wasted three times since 2021.

Duren played 79 games last season, the third-highest total for any rotation center. He averaged 11.6 points and 8.6 rebounds in his sophomore year, then jumped to 10.4 boards this season while his defensive rating improved 4.2 points. The Pistons went 14-68. They fired Monty Williams after one season of a $78.5M deal, paid him $65M to leave, then hired J.B. Bickerstaff, whose previous stop in Cleveland featured Jarrett Allen at $20M per year. Allen's deal, signed in 2021, is the comp Detroit wishes still applied. It doesn't.

The center market has bifurcated. Rudy Gobert signed for $43M annually in 2023. Nikola Jokić's super-max runs through 2028 at an average of $55M. Joel Embiid extended for $51M per year. Those are MVPs. Below them: Bam Adebayo at $34M, Jarrett Allen's extension kicking to $20M, and Clint Capela still on $22M from the Atlanta deal. Duren slots below Adebayo in current production but ahead of Allen's timeline. He's two years younger than Mobley was at extension. The Pistons' problem is not Duren's ceiling. It's that they have no veteran infrastructure to justify paying him before seeing Year 4.

Detroit has $48M in cap space projected for summer 2025 if they decline Simone Fontecchio's option and let Tim Hardaway Jr. expire. They'll spend some of it. The Western Conference playoff teams are all capped out; Toronto, Charlotte, and Detroit are the only buyers with meaningful room. If the Pistons use $20M on a wing and $12M on depth, that leaves $16M and a Duren extension question they can't answer without knowing what Milwaukee offers Şengün or what Cleveland pays Mobley. So they'll wait. Duren plays out Year 3. Some playoff team—Indiana, Sacramento, the Lakers if they're still pretending—will offer $28M per year in summer 2026. Detroit matches or pivots to Isaiah Stewart at $15M as the long-term five.

The smarter move happened in Houston. Şengün's extension talks started in October 2024. The Rockets didn't wait for the Mobley comp. They locked 21-year-old production at $28-30M and moved on. Detroit has the same data set—Duren's rebounding rate is higher than Şengün's, his defensive win shares are comparable—but none of the urgency. Bickerstaff wants to see how Cade Cunningham and Duren fit before committing $120M. Trajan Langdon, the new GM, hasn't worked with Duren's agent yet. The front office that drafted Duren is gone. The coach who developed him got fired. The extension window exists on paper.

Duren's camp knows this. They'll take meetings in July but won't push for a number Detroit can't justify. The Pistons rank 28th in revenue, $30M behind the league median. Tom Gores paid luxury tax exactly once, in 2022, for a 23-59 team. A Duren extension before the market resets would cost Detroit flexibility they'll need if Cunningham demands a trade or if Ausar Thompson's shooting doesn't develop. The real decision happens in 18 months, after Şengün and Mobley sign, after the Pistons either make the play-in or finish 25-57 again.

Watch Şengün's extension structure. If Houston uses incentives to keep the guarantee under $100M, Detroit has a template. If the Rockets go full $140M over five years, Duren's floor is $25M annually and the Pistons are negotiating against Milwaukee or Indiana. Bickerstaff's first training camp is in four months. Duren's agent will be in Las Vegas for Summer League in eight weeks, sitting near every Western Conference GM who needs a center and has a trade exception.

The takeaway
Detroit delays Duren's extension until Şengün and Mobley reset the center market—risking a **$28M** offer sheet in 2026 they'll have to match.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
