FIFA Readies 2030 World Cup Rights After $1.8B U.S. Broadcast Windfall

Summer tournament ratings give Fox, NBC, and streamers data to justify nine-figure bids.

FIFA will open the 2030 and 2034 World Cup media rights auction within 90 days, according to two people familiar with the timeline. The decision follows the 2026 tournament's 47.3 million average U.S. viewership across Fox's broadcast and streaming windows, a 68% increase over Qatar 2022 and the highest since the 51.2 million who watched the 1994 final on ABC.

Fox paid $425 million for English-language U.S. rights to the 2026 tournament in a 2015 bundled deal that included 2018 and 2022. Telemundo paid $600 million for Spanish rights across the same window. Those deals expire after the current cycle. FIFA is now packaging 2030 and 2034 separately, with North American rights expected to command $1.5 billion to $2.2 billion per cycle, depending on whether a buyer takes both tournaments or splits them. The 2030 event will be co-hosted by Spain, Portugal, Morocco, Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay across three continents. 2034 goes to Saudi Arabia alone.

The numbers matter because Fox, NBCUniversal, ESPN, Apple, and Amazon now have eight weeks of live match data showing U.S. audiences will watch soccer in July. The 2026 final between Argentina and France drew 38.1 million viewers on Fox and Peacock combined, the largest audience for any sporting event in the U.S. since Super Bowl LIX in February. The semifinals averaged 29.4 million. Quarterfinals averaged 22.7 million. Even the third-place match, typically a relegation-zone broadcast, pulled 14.3 million on a Tuesday afternoon. Fox's streaming-only matches on Fox Sports Digital averaged 3.8 million concurrent viewers, a 210% increase over its 2022 streaming windows and evidence that younger cohorts will pay for soccer access.

The advertiser response is instructive. Fox sold out its 2026 inventory by April, 11 weeks before kickoff, at CPMs 40% to 65% higher than its upfront commitments for NFL and MLB. Brands that bought in late—Nike, Visa, Coca-Cola—paid premiums approaching $950,000 per 30-second spot during knockout rounds, comparable to College Football Playoff rates. Telemundo's Spanish-language final delivered 12.6 million viewers, the largest U.S. Spanish-language audience for a sporting event outside of boxing. NBC is now socializing the idea internally that Telemundo should bid for English rights in 2030, a reversal of the traditional split, according to one executive who has seen the proposal.

FIFA's structure advantages deep-pocketed buyers. The governing body prefers long-term deals that bundle men's and women's tournaments, which means a bidder needs appetite for the 2030 and 2034 Men's World Cups, plus the 2027 and 2031 Women's World Cups. Apple has the balance sheet but lacks the live sports infrastructure that Fox, NBC, and ESPN have spent 15 years building. Amazon has the infrastructure but has historically balked at rights fees above $1 billion per property, preferring to assemble a portfolio of secondary packages (Thursday Night Football, some Yankees games, League Cup). ESPN is constrained by its cable subscriber decline—down 9.2 million homes in the past 18 months—but benefits from its relationship with FIFA through existing World Cup studio production deals. One media banker involved in previous World Cup negotiations said the winning bid will likely come from a consortium: a legacy broadcaster handling production and linear distribution, with a streamer taking digital rights and younger demos.

The Saudi element adds leverage. The 2034 tournament gives FIFA a built-in hedge if U.S. broadcasters lowball the 2030 package, since Saudi state entities are expected to pay above-market rates for their home tournament regardless of viewership projections. Mohammed bin Salman's Public Investment Fund, which already owns 75% of the Saudi Pro League's commercial rights and has spent $1.1 billion on player transfers since 2023, is preparing a separate domestic rights tender that could reach $800 million for 2034 alone. That figure dwarfs the $120 million Saudi state TV paid for 2026 rights, but the kingdom views the World Cup as a branding exercise, not a P&L event. FIFA can therefore push U.S. buyers harder, knowing it has a floor.

What to watch: Fox's exclusive negotiating window closes in mid-September, per its 2015 deal terms. If Fox does not meet FIFA's reserve—rumored internally at $1.65 billion for both cycles—the rights go to open tender in October. NBCUniversal executives have circled early November for board approval if the auction proceeds. Amazon's sports leadership has scheduled a late October review of its World Cup bid strategy, according to one person who has seen the calendar invite. Meanwhile, Apple is in early conversations with MLS about potentially bundling a World Cup bid with an extension of its $2.5 billion MLS rights deal, which runs through 2032 but includes opt-out language in 2028.

The 2026 ratings guarantee that someone will pay. The only question is whether FIFA can extract a second-screen premium from a bidder who believes soccer is no longer a quadrennial audience, but a standing one.

The takeaway
FIFA's 2030/2034 rights auction opens in 90 days with bids expected between $1.5B-$2.2B, driven by 2026's 47M average U.S. viewership.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
