FIFA Opens 2030 World Cup Media Rights Auction, $3B+ U.S. Package Expected

FOX, NBC, ESPN circle after 2026 tournament drew record audiences; FIFA wants split U.S. deals to avoid single-network dependency.

FIFA began accepting confidential bids for 2030 Men's World Cup media rights this week, the formal start of what four broadcast executives expect to become the most expensive tournament package in history. The U.S. territory alone is projected to command $3 billion to $3.5 billion, more than double the $1.1 billion FOX paid for combined 2018 and 2022 rights, according to two people familiar with preliminary discussions.

The 2026 tournament's final, held July 19 at MetLife Stadium, averaged 38.9 million viewers across FOX platforms, the most-watched men's soccer match in U.S. history and a 62% increase over the 2022 final. Those numbers reset FIFA's pricing floor. Zurich is now structuring the 2030 auction around separate packages for group-stage matches, knockout rounds, and streaming rights, a framework designed to extract maximum value from multiple bidders rather than repeat FOX's exclusive 2018/2022 deal. One media banker called it "the unbundling strategy Netflix fears, applied to sports."

FOX Sports submitted a prequalification letter in June and remains the incumbent favorite, but NBC Sports and ESPN have both retained outside advisors and begun financial modeling. NBC's interest is new. The network has never held World Cup rights but sees soccer as the last major U.S. sport without a dominant broadcaster, per a person who attended a May board presentation. ESPN parent Disney is simultaneously negotiating a $3 billion+ extension of its Champions League deal with UEFA, creating a bundling opportunity if FIFA is willing to discuss multi-tournament structures. One executive close to FIFA said the organization prefers avoiding that; president Gianni Infantino wants competitive tension, not package discounts.

The 2030 tournament itself introduces structural complexity. Matches will be held across Morocco, Portugal, Spain, Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay, the first true multi-continental World Cup. That geography complicates production logistics and time-zone scheduling, but U.S. broadcasters care less about kickoff times than total inventory. The expanded 48-team format delivers 104 matches, up from 64 in 2022, giving networks 40 additional broadcast windows to sell against. One ad-sales chief estimated that alone justifies a 30% to 40% rights-fee premium before accounting for audience growth.

Streaming remains the wild card. FIFA has explored launching its own direct-to-consumer platform, a model that would bypass traditional broadcasters for at least some matches. Apple has held exploratory talks, according to two people familiar, though no formal proposal has emerged. The company's $2.5 billion MLS deal taught it soccer rights are cheaper to acquire than to monetize; average MLS Season Pass subscriptions are tracking below internal projections by roughly 25%, per a person who reviewed recent data. That math makes Apple cautious on World Cup spend unless it can secure global rights, not just U.S. territory, which FIFA is unlikely to grant.

Bids are due in tranches through October, with FIFA planning to announce a winner by December. The timeline allows losing U.S. bidders to pivot immediately to 2027 Women's World Cup rights, which open for negotiation in early 2027. One network executive called that "the consolation bracket," though women's tournament rights have lately traded at 15% to 20% of men's equivalent, a ratio FIFA is working to narrow. The organization has told potential broadcasters it expects the women's 2027 package to approach $500 million in the U.S., which would represent a 3x increase over 2023 rights.

Two details to watch. First, whether FIFA allows joint bids. NBC and CBS explored a shared package for 2026 rights in 2015 before FIFA rejected the structure; rules for 2030 have not been published. Second, whether any bidder pushes for a multi-cycle deal covering both 2030 and 2034. Saudi Arabia is the sole bidder for 2034 hosting rights, and FIFA has signaled it wants to lock in that tournament's legitimacy through early media commitments. One Gulf-based advisor said that creates "optionality for the right bidder," but U.S. networks have shown little interest in binding themselves to a winter tournament in Riyadh a decade out.

FIFA's media revenue reached $7.6 billion in the 2019-2022 cycle, of which U.S. rights accounted for roughly 14%. The 2030 deal will reset that percentage. One network finance officer put it plainly: "We're bidding on the last non-NFL property that can still deliver 30 million+ live viewers. That's worth paying for. The question is how much."

The takeaway
FIFA expects **$3B+** for U.S. rights alone; FOX, NBC, ESPN circling as streaming wild card Apple reassesses after MLS underperformance.

AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
