Florida State Adds Former Power Four Head Coach Mike Bloomgren to Staff

Rice's ex-HC joins FSU in analyst role as Norvell builds institutional depth amid ACC transition uncertainty.

Florida State hired Mike Bloomgren, who spent six seasons as Rice's head coach, to an analyst position on Mike Norvell's staff. Bloomgren posted a 24-48 record at Rice but owns a 2018 Broyles Award as the nation's top assistant when he was Stanford's offensive line coach. The move went public this week without a formal announcement.

Bloomgren's hire adds a second former head coach to FSU's support staff, joining analyst Randy Shannon. The structure mirrors what Georgia and Alabama run: low-cost depth with Power Four credential. Bloomgren will not coach on the field under NCAA rules but can scout opponents, review film, and counsel position groups. His Stanford pedigree matters more than his Rice record. He coached 13 NFL Draft picks on the Cardinal offensive line between 2012 and 2017, including Joshua Garnett (first round, 2016) and David Yankey. FSU's offensive line ranked 92nd nationally in sacks allowed last season. Bloomgren's presence signals Norvell is adding technical expertise without burning a full assistant slot.

The timing is clean. FSU is 11 weeks from its season opener against Alabama in Atlanta, and Norvell has already lost two coordinators to head coaching jobs in the past 18 months. The Seminoles went 2-10 in 2024 after being left out of the College Football Playoff despite finishing 13-0 the prior season. Institutional memory matters when rebuilding trust with recruits, sponsors, and the donor base. Bloomgren spent 14 years in the Pac-12 system before taking the Rice job. He knows how to operate in a conference with unstable media deals and revenue gaps, which is where FSU now sits after the ACC's grant-of-rights cage match.

FSU also landed a commitment Tuesday from 4-star defensive back Za'Kari Johnson, its second blue-chip DB pledge in April. The recruiting momentum is not accidental. Analyst hires like Bloomgren free up on-field assistants to travel. They also let Norvell deploy a former head coach on recruiting calls without NCAA contact limits. Bloomgren can text recruits, host parents on visits, and explain player development systems during living-room pitches. That is the actual job. The analyst title is administrative paperwork.

The broader play is roster stability. FSU lost 15 players to the transfer portal in December alone, many citing nil funding gaps and program direction. Adding a former head coach who has rebuilt a locker room (Rice went 1-11 in Bloomgren's first season, then 7-6 in year five) signals to current players that Norvell is investing in infrastructure. It also gives FSU a continuity option if an assistant leaves mid-cycle. Bloomgren has already run a program. He can step into a larger role without a learning curve.

Watch whether Bloomgren surfaces in offensive line meeting rooms during fall camp. Stanford's system was gap-scheme heavy, built for pro-style downhill runs. FSU has shifted toward more tempo and RPO tags under Norvell, but the base footwork and hand technique do not change. If Bloomgren's fingerprints show up in FSU's run game by October, the hire will have justified itself. Also watch whether Rice replaces him with a former FSU assistant. The Owls need staff who can recruit Texas, and Norvell's tree has branches in Houston and Dallas.

Bloomgren's salary will likely land between $150,000 and $250,000, standard for Power Four analyst roles with head coaching experience. That is rounding error in a football budget that carries $7.2 million in assistant pool money, but it is signal. FSU is not cutting. It is adding. The accounting matters when the ACC is in court and every line item gets audited for commitment level.

The takeaway
Bloomgren's analyst hire adds former head coach depth and offensive line pedigree for minimal cost while freeing assistants for recruiting travel.

AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
