Golden State Valkyries hit $1 billion valuation in year one, first women's franchise ever

CNBC ranking puts expansion team ahead of New York Liberty; Joe Lacob model copies Warriors playbook into different economics.

The Golden State Valkyries are worth $1 billion, according to CNBC's 2026 franchise valuations released May 4th. No women's sports team has crossed ten figures before. The franchise began play eleven months ago.

The New York Liberty rank second at $790 million, followed by the Los Angeles Sparks at $575 million. The Valkyries' valuation reflects $50 million in estimated revenue for 2026, a Chase Center lease that mirrors the Warriors' terms, and sponsorship pricing that assumes Silicon Valley corporate dollars flow at NBA rates. The team sold 16,800 season tickets before playing a game. Courtside seats moved at $5,000 per game in the secondary market during the playoff run.

Joe Lacob paid $50 million for the expansion slot in December 2023. The math works because the Valkyries operate inside Warriors infrastructure. The team shares the Chase Center calendar, the Warriors' broadcast production crew, and the same corporate hospitality inventory. Salesforce, Google, and Oracle wrote checks at men's team rates. The financial model assumes the WNBA's next media deal—negotiations begin this summer—will triple the current $200 million annual rights fee. Disney and Amazon are expected to bid. If the league reaches $600 million annually, franchise values reset again.

The valuation also reflects scarcity. Commissioner Cathy Engelbert capped expansion at 16 teams by 2028. Toronto enters in 2026, Portland in 2027. After that, the league closes the window for at least five years. Private equity firms circled the Connecticut Sun and Minnesota Lynx in March; neither owner has signaled interest in selling, but the Valkyries comp changes the conversation. The Sun last sold in 2003 for $10 million.

Sponsor economics tell the rest. The Valkyries' jersey patch deal with Accenture pays $8 million annually, comparable to mid-tier NBA agreements. Rakuten pays the Warriors $20 million for the same real estate. The convergence matters to brands chasing women's audience share without the clutter of men's sports. Visa, Glossier, and Fidelity all took Valkyries founding partner positions at $3-5 million per year. The Warriors have 28 corporate partners; the Valkyries signed 22 before opening night.

The WNBA's salary cap sits at $1.46 million per team for 2026. The Valkyries' payroll represents 2.9% of revenue, compared to 40%+ in the NBA. That margin funds infrastructure, but it also exposes the league to labor pressure. The players' union can opt out of the current CBA in 2027. Agent conversations in April centered on revenue-sharing models that push player compensation to 20-25% of league income. If that happens, franchise margins compress, valuations flatten, and the Valkyries' number starts looking like an outlier.

Watch the media deal. The NBA's new $76 billion rights package set a floor for women's sports negotiations. If the WNBA clears $500 million annually, the Valkyries' billion-dollar mark becomes the middle of the range, not the top. Toronto's expansion fee was $115 million; Portland paid $125 million. The next slot, if it opens, will test $200 million.

The takeaway
First billion-dollar women's franchise reflects NBA infrastructure leverage, sponsor convergence, and pre-media-deal scarcity pricing.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
