Houston Dash Lock Midfielder Danny Colaprico Through 2027 at Age 33

Three-year guarantee signals Dash bet on championship window while roster math tightens across NWSL.

The Houston Dash signed midfielder Danny Colaprico, 33, to a contract through the 2027 NWSL season, the club announced Tuesday. The deal runs three years and marks a significant roster commitment to a player who will be 36 when it expires.

Colaprico joined the Dash ahead of the 2024 season after seven years with the Chicago Red Stars. She started 20 of Houston's 26 regular-season matches last year, logging 1,683 minutes in central midfield. The Dash finished seventh in the league with a 10-12-4 record, missing the playoffs for the second consecutive season. Colaprico's salary was $85,000 in 2024 under the NWSL's disclosed compensation structure, placing her in the middle tier of non-allocated players.

The length matters more than the number. NWSL rosters carry 26 active spots with a $3.3 million salary cap and no traditional free agency until a player completes six years of service. Colaprico brings leadership and positional flexibility, but three guaranteed years past age 33 narrows Houston's margin for error if form declines or injury emerges. The Dash already carry veteran contracts for forward Diana Ordóñez (31) and defender Paige Nielsen (32). General manager Alex Singer is building for a 2025 playoff push while hedging against the roster volatility that has defined Houston since Michelle French bought the club in 2023.

The deal also reflects NWSL's evolving talent market. With average player age dropping to 24.7 last season as expansion teams prioritized youth, proven veterans who can organize a midfield and mentor younger signees command term even when analytics suggest shorter deals. Houston added forward Andressa Alves from Angel City in January and signed University of North Carolina midfielder Emily Colton, 22, in the draft. Colaprico's role is structural: she covers defensive gaps, recycles possession, and allows Houston's wingers to press higher. Singer is betting that tactical value justifies the roster inflexibility through 2027.

Watch for Houston's next contract moves before the NWSL roster freeze in late March. The Dash still need a starting goalkeeper after releasing Jane Campbell in December, and they have $1.1 million in cap space remaining before hitting the threshold. Colaprico's deal consumes roughly $255,000 across three years, leaving room for a designated signing if French is willing to deploy allocation money. The Dash open the season April 5 at home against the Utah Royals.

Colaprico's agent, Melanie Sloan of Wasserman, negotiated a similar three-year structure for midfielder Sam Coffey with Portland last summer. The market is clarifying: veteran stability costs term, and Houston just paid it.

The takeaway
Houston commits three years to a 33-year-old midfielder, tightening roster flexibility to secure playoff-caliber structure through 2027.

AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable.
