Texans WR Jayden Higgins Tears ACL in Joint Practice, Out for 2026 Season

Houston's receiving depth chart reshuffles ahead of Week 1, with coordinator Bobby Slowik's play sheet now tilting toward Tank Dell and Noah Brown.

Houston Texans wide receiver Jayden Higgins tore his ACL during a joint practice with the Las Vegas Raiders on Tuesday and will miss the entire 2026 season. The injury occurred in the first session of a two-day camp visit at the Raiders' Henderson facility, with Higgins carted off the field after a non-contact plant during an 11-on-11 period. The team confirmed the diagnosis Wednesday morning.

Higgins, 25, entered camp as Houston's projected fourth receiver behind Nico Collins, Tank Dell, and veteran addition Noah Brown. He caught 38 passes for 571 yards and 3 touchdowns in 2025, his second NFL season, mostly operating from the slot in offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik's three-receiver sets. The Texans ran 11 personnel on 74% of their offensive snaps last season, the third-highest rate in the league, meaning Higgins was on the field for roughly 850 plays. That volume now redistributes.

Slowik's offense leans on pre-snap motion and quick game concepts that require receivers to understand multiple alignments. Higgins had spent the spring mastering the Z and slot roles, giving C.J. Stroud a reliable third option on 3rd-and-medium conversions. Without him, the Texans face a choice: promote 2025 sixth-round pick Xavier Hutchinson, who ran a 4.63 forty and profiles as a possession target, or lean harder into two-tight-end sets featuring Dalton Schultz and Brevin Jordan. The latter option appeals to Slowik's play-action game but shrinks the field for Collins and Dell, both of whom thrive on vertical spacing. Hutchinson, meanwhile, has 11 career catches in two seasons and missed most of spring with a hamstring issue. Houston also has Robert Woods, 32, on a veteran minimum deal, but he logged fewer than 400 snaps last year and projects as a hat-on-a-hat depth piece rather than a weekly contributor.

The timing is notable. General manager Nick Caserio rebuilt Houston's receiving room this offseason by signing Brown to a two-year, $12 million deal and drafting Georgia slot man Ladd McConkey in the second round. McConkey, however, is still working through a minor knee scope and has been limited in camp. If he's not ready for Week 1 against Indianapolis, the Texans will dress three healthy receivers with meaningful reps in Slowik's system: Collins, Dell, and Brown. That's tight for a coordinator who scripted 15 plays per game last season and rarely repeated personnel groupings. League sources say Caserio has already placed calls to agents representing available veterans, including Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Josh Reynolds, both of whom remain unsigned as of Wednesday afternoon. Neither fits Slowik's profile cleanly—Valdes-Scantling is a vertical threat without much route nuance, Reynolds a volume slot who doesn't run the full tree—but either would provide insurance if McConkey's knee lingers or Dell, who missed four games last year with a hamstring injury, suffers a setback.

Watch for Houston to work out multiple receivers before their Friday practice. The team has $8.2 million in cap space, enough to add a veteran on a one-year deal without restructuring contracts, though Caserio typically avoids August additions unless the player knows the system. Slowik worked under Kyle Shanahan in San Francisco, where the 49ers signed Ray-Ray McCloud mid-camp in 2022 after a similar injury, so there's precedent. If no external move materializes by Saturday, expect Hutchinson to dress for the preseason finale against New Orleans and handle 25-30 snaps as a live audition. McConkey's knee will be re-evaluated Monday, with the team hoping for clearance by the following Thursday.

The Texans open the season in 18 days, and Slowik now has one fewer body who knows the verbs.

The takeaway
Higgins's ACL tear shrinks Houston's receiver rotation to three healthy bodies, forcing Nick Caserio to weigh veteran additions against Xavier Hutchinson's untested upside.

AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable.
