Angels Fire Perry Minasian After Five Years, Install John Mozeliak as Interim GM

St. Louis architect arrives mid-season as Arte Moreno resets after another playoff miss.

The Los Angeles Angels dismissed general manager Perry Minasian on Thursday and immediately named John Mozeliak, the former St. Louis Cardinals president of baseball operations, as interim GM. Minasian held the role for five seasons. The Angels have not reached the postseason since 2014.

Mozeliak, 66, stepped down from the Cardinals after the 2024 season following a 23-year run in St. Louis that produced two World Series titles and nine playoff appearances. He has been consulting for various clubs since his departure. The Angels did not disclose contract terms, but people familiar with the arrangement say Mozeliak is expected to serve through the end of the season with an option for 2027. Owner Arte Moreno personally recruited Mozeliak during a dinner in Newport Beach three weeks ago.

The move signals Moreno's impatience with the franchise's trajectory under Minasian, who inherited a roster anchored by Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani and failed to build around them. Ohtani signed with the Dodgers in December 2023 for $700 million. The Angels finished fourth in the AL West last season at 73-89 and currently sit at 32-48, 12.5 games out of the division lead. Minasian's most visible moves included trading for Tyler Anderson, signing Anthony Rendon to a contract extension that now looks immovable, and drafting Nolan Schanuel, who has shown intermittent promise at first base. The farm system ranks 22nd in MLB according to Baseball America's midseason update.

Mozeliak's arrival changes the calculus for the Angels' July trade posture. He built his reputation on extracting value from mid-market constraints, often flipping veterans at the deadline for controllable pieces. The Angels have $48 million in expiring contracts, including outfielder Hunter Renfroe and reliever Carlos Estévez, both of whom could draw interest from contenders. Whether Mozeliak flips them or signals a win-now stance by adding at the deadline will clarify Moreno's actual timeline. Worth noting: Mozeliak was shopping Nolan Arenado last winter before the Cardinals' front office reset; Rendon's contract, while larger, presents a similar albatross problem.

The front office structure now includes Mozeliak atop the baseball operations hierarchy, assistant GM Alex Tamin continuing in his role, and director of player development Mike Gallego managing the minor league pipeline. Mozeliak has historically leaned on analytics integration while maintaining strong scouting voices, a balance the Angels have struggled to execute under Minasian. The Cardinals' model under Mozeliak emphasized pitching development and aggressive bullpen construction, both areas where the Angels rank in the bottom third of MLB. The Angels' bullpen ERA sits at 4.68, 24th in the league.

The permanent GM search will likely extend into the offseason unless Mozeliak's interim performance compels Moreno to hand him a multi-year deal. Candidates to watch include Rays assistant GM Chaim Bloom, who left Boston after a rocky tenure and has been advising Tampa Bay, and Cubs assistant GM Jeff Greenberg, who has interviewed for multiple GM openings in recent years. Mozeliak's presence also raises the question of whether he will import any of his former Cardinals lieutenants; Mike Girsch, who served as St. Louis' GM under Mozeliak, is currently unattached and has West Coast ties.

The Angels play 82 more games before the offseason. Trout, 33, is signed through 2030 at $35.45 million annually. The clock is loud.

The takeaway
Mozeliak's deadline moves will reveal whether Moreno is resetting for 2027 or gambling on Trout's remaining window.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
