Angels fire Perry Minasian, install John Mozeliak as interim GM mid-season

Rare June dismissal signals ownership impatience; Mozeliak's Cardinals pedigree suggests permanent role unlikely.

The Los Angeles Angels terminated general manager Perry Minasian on Wednesday and promoted John Mozeliak to interim general manager, marking the first mid-season GM firing in franchise history since 1999. Minasian, hired in November 2020 on a five-year contract, leaves with two years and approximately $3.2 million remaining.

The move follows a 23-37 start and comes eight days before the July amateur draft, where the Angels hold the No. 12 pick. Mozeliak joined the Angels front office in March as a senior advisor after stepping down from his Cardinals president-of-baseball-operations role in October. He spent 22 years in St. Louis, delivering two World Series titles and eleven playoff appearances, but the Cardinals missed the postseason in four of his final five seasons.

Owner Arte Moreno historically resists in-season dismissals, preferring October housecleaning. The timing suggests pressure beyond win-loss—likely connected to discord over trade-deadline strategy. Minasian acquired ten players via trade in his tenure but failed to secure pitching depth despite annual payrolls near $200 million. The Angels rank 28th in ERA at 5.14 and have burned through 19 different starting pitchers this season. Meanwhile, Shohei Ohtani's departure to the Dodgers in December eliminated the franchise's lone marketable superstar, and local television revenue remains in limbo following Diamond Sports Group's bankruptcy. The Angels' RSN deal, worth an estimated $150 million annually, expires after 2025, and no replacement framework exists.

Mozeliak's interim tag matters. He turns 56 in January and accepted the Angels advisor role explicitly to avoid another grinding GM cycle. His hiring suggests ownership wants credibility during the search, not a long-term architect. The Angels have interviewed four external candidates in the past ten days, including Dodgers assistant GM Brandon Gomes and Rays VP Peter Bendix. Neither has returned calls since Minasian's firing, according to two people familiar with the process.

The Angels face a trade deadline with few movable assets. Closer Carlos Estévez holds a $13 million option for 2027 and draws interest from contenders, but the bullpen otherwise offers little value. Taylor Ward and Logan O'Hoppe control arbitration years, making them unlikely sale candidates unless ownership abandons the competitive window entirely. The farm system ranks 22nd per Baseball America, limiting trade ammunition.

Mozeliak's first task is the draft. The Angels employ 12 scouts compared to 18 at this point last year, the result of February layoffs. Scouting director Tim McWilliam, hired by Minasian in 2021, remains in place but his future hinges on the permanent GM's preferences. Slot value for the No. 12 pick is $4.95 million; the Angels have $7.1 million in total pool money and historically spend to the cap.

The Angels have not won a playoff game since 2009 and have finished above .500 twice since 2015. Moreno, who first tried to sell the franchise in August 2022 before withdrawing in January 2023, has publicly committed to a 2026 contention window, though that timeline now appears implausible without significant roster restructuring.

Mozeliak will hold his first media availability Thursday at 2 p.m. PT. The Angels play a three-game series in Seattle starting Friday. Executive search firm Turnkey Search, which assisted with Minasian's hiring, has been retained again. Expect a permanent hire by the GM meetings in November, assuming ownership doesn't restart its sale exploration first.

The takeaway
Mid-season GM firing breaks Angels precedent; Mozeliak's interim status signals rushed damage control, not long-term vision.

AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
