Dodgers hire Alex Anthopoulos as VP baseball operations under Farhan Zaidi

Toronto exec joins second-largest payroll front office as analytics build continues pre-Kershaw extension.

The Los Angeles Dodgers hired Alex Anthopoulos as vice president of baseball operations, installing him under GM Farhan Zaidi in a front office running a $235 million payroll. Anthopoulos joins from the Toronto Blue Jays, where he spent eight seasons in the front office before departing mid-rebuild.

The move adds a second Canadian analytics executive to the Dodgers' baseball operations structure. Zaidi, who arrived from Oakland's moneyball infrastructure in 2014, has been reshaping the Dodgers' evaluation processes while managing the largest player-development budget in baseball. Anthopoulos ran Toronto's front office from 2009 through 2015, overseeing the $130 million David Price rental and the Jose Bautista extension before ownership declined his contract renewal. He left Toronto in October 2015 after the club reached the ALCS.

The hire matters for three reasons. First, it signals the Dodgers are building redundancy into their front-office depth chart as ownership weighs whether to promote Zaidi into a president role vacated when Stan Kasten shifted focus to the team's SportsNet LA carriage dispute. Second, Anthopoulos brings established relationships with Scott Boras and the Canadian pipeline that produced Joey Votto, Justin Morneau, and current Dodgers farmhand James Paxton. Third, the timing—mid-January, after the Winter Meetings—suggests this was a negotiated exit from Toronto rather than a poach, meaning the Dodgers paid no compensation.

The Dodgers have $89 million committed to Clayton Kershaw, Adrian Gonzalez, and Yasiel Puig through 2020. Kershaw's extension talks are expected to begin before Opening Day, with early frameworks starting at $240 million over seven years. Anthopoulos joins a front office that will need to model financial flexibility around that number while managing a farm system ranked fourth by Baseball America. His Toronto tenure featured aggressive deadline acquisitions—Troy Tulowitzki, Price, Mark Lowe—funded by deferred payments that pushed costs into future budget years. The Dodgers, owned by Guggenheim Partners' $2.15 billion purchase group, have no such constraints.

Watch whether Anthopoulos accompanies Zaidi to the Scott Boras summit in Newport Beach scheduled for early February, where Kershaw's camp typically begins extension discussions. Also watch whether the Dodgers promote from within to replace the director of player development seat Anthopoulos now occupies in the org chart—Gabe Kapler and Josh Byrnes are both on staff and interviewing for GM roles elsewhere. The Blue Jays have not announced a replacement VP.

The Dodgers open Cactus League play February 26 against the White Sox. Kershaw throws his first bullpen session February 18.

The takeaway
Dodgers add Toronto's Anthopoulos under Zaidi as front-office depth before Kershaw extension talks begin in February.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
