Miami Dolphins dismantle $160M core, trade Tagovailoa and Waddle in steel-frame reset

The Miami Dolphins traded quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and wide receiver Jaylen Waddle within a 72-hour window this week, completing a roster dismantling that began with the July release of Tyreek Hill and ends with Malik Willis under center. The combined cap relief exceeds $58M for 2026, with Tagovailoa's $53.1M annual average—signed September 2024—now another team's problem. Waddle, extension-eligible this winter, moved before Miami wrote the check.

The club signed Willis to a one-year prove-it deal at $3.5M guaranteed, the league minimum for a fourth-year player. Willis started three games for Green Bay in 2024, completing 61.2% of attempts with five touchdowns and two interceptions across 127 dropbacks. He is not the answer. He is the placeholder while Miami banks picks and chases a top-three selection in the 2027 draft. The Dolphins now hold four picks in the first three rounds of 2027, pending trade compensation details not yet disclosed.

This is an ownership-approved scorched-earth rebuild, the kind that works when the stadium lease is long and the local TV deal is locked. Hard Rock Stadium's naming rights run through 2028 at $18M annually, and the club's regional sports network contract with Bally Sports Florida extends to 2030. Owner Stephen Ross, 83, installed this front office in January 2025 with explicit instructions to fix the cap and stop renting stars. Tagovailoa's concussion history made him tradeable despite the contract; Waddle's age-26 season made him valuable despite the uncertainty. Hill, 32 in March, was released after requesting his exit when the rebuild became obvious.

Sponsor exposure is the immediate concern. FTX's logo lasted eight months in 2021 before collapse; Hard Rock stepped in, but the Dolphins sold integrated partnerships to brands who bought in on Hill's Instagram reach (14.2M followers) and Tagovailoa's Samoan diaspora appeal. Bud Light's $4.2M annual South Florida activation package runs through 2027 and was negotiated around nationally televised Dolphins offense. The club's merchandise revenue fell 22% year-over-year in the first quarter of 2025, per Sports Business Journal, before this week's moves. Expect that to deepen.

The coaching staff is now working under an effective audition. Head coach Mike McDaniel signed a four-year extension in January 2025 at $8M per year, but the rebuild timeline does not guarantee his survival. Offensive coordinator Frank Smith, who called plays for Willis in Green Bay's emergency starts, follows McDaniel from the Shanahan tree but has never developed a franchise quarterback. The defense returns seven starters and coordinator Vic Fangio, whose contract runs through 2027. If Miami finishes bottom-five in wins this season, McDaniel's buyout becomes manageable and the next coach drafts his own quarterback in 2027.

The market read is clean: Ross is spending two years in the wilderness to escape eight years of expensive mediocrity. The Dolphins have made the playoffs three times since 2016, never advancing past the wild-card round, and spent the sixth-most cap dollars in the league over that span. Trading Tagovailoa before his no-trade clause activated in March 2027 was the leverage window. Waddle's departure was the signal that no one is safe.

Watch for coordinator movement before the 2027 draft. If Miami lands a top-three pick and McDaniel survives, Smith likely does not. The club will target an offensive mind with quarterback development credibility, and that hire happens in January 2027, three months before the draft. Hard Rock's suite revenue will show stress in the November quarterly report. And someone will pay Waddle $28M per year this winter, making Miami's decision to move him now instead of later the tell on how ugly they expect 2026 to be.

The Dolphins open the season September 10 against the New York Jets. Las Vegas has Miami's win total at 4.5. The under is -140.

The takeaway
Miami's **$58M** cap reset and Malik Willis placeholder signal a two-year tank toward 2027's draft, not a competitive 2026.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
