Kuminga Takes Minnesota's $65M Short Deal Over Lakers' $88M — 2027 Timing Explains It

Wolves get a tradeable wing before Edwards' max hits; Kuminga bets on timing his extension for the new CBA window.

Jonathan Kuminga signed a two-year, $65 million deal with Minnesota on Tuesday, walking past a Lakers offer reported at three years, $88 million. The math looks backwards until you map the calendar: Kuminga becomes a free agent again in summer 2027, six months before the new collective bargaining agreement's salary-cap smoothing provisions expire and max contracts reset upward. The Timberwolves get a switchable wing on an expiring deal before Anthony Edwards' $245 million designated extension begins in 2025-26. Both sides bought optionality.

Minnesota needed the roster slot more than the commitment. Karl-Anthony Towns' exit to New York left $49 million in outgoing salary against Julius Randle's $28.9 million incoming — a $20 million gap the front office has been filling with one-year pieces since October. Kuminga gives them a 6-foot-7 defender who can guard Jokić in the post and Dončić on the perimeter, something Randle cannot do for more than 18 seconds without fouling. The Wolves were 24th in opponent fast-break points last season; Kuminga ranked 7th in the league in transition deflections per 36 minutes during his Golden State tenure. Chris Finch now has someone to throw at opposing initiators without pulling Edwards off his assignment.

The $23 million gap between what Kuminga took and what the Lakers offered becomes a $58 million swing if he signs a max extension in 2027 under the new cap projections. League salary-cap analysts are penciling the 2027-28 cap at $172 million, up from this season's $140.6 million, which pushes a five-year max for a player with Kuminga's service time to roughly $285 million. If he posts 22 points and 7 rebounds over the next two seasons on a playoff team, he clears $220 million on his next deal — more than the Lakers' three-year offer plus any realistic extension. The short contract also keeps him younger than 25 when he hits unrestricted free agency, preserving the age discount teams apply to long-term risk.

Minnesota's ownership structure makes the move cleaner than it looks. Glen Taylor still controls the voting trust while Marc Lore and Alex Rodriguez work through their $1.5 billion purchase-agreement dispute in arbitration. A two-year Kuminga deal expires before the ownership transition completes, meaning the new regime inherits a tradeable $32.5 million expiring contract instead of a locked-in $29 million annual commitment through 2028. If Edwards and Randle don't fit by February 2026, Kuminga becomes the Wolves' best trade chip at the deadline — a playoff-ready wing on a one-year deal that doesn't hard-cap the acquiring team. That's worth more than $14 million per year in roster flexibility.

The Lakers' offer suggests they're already planning for LeBron James' post-2025 roster. At 40 years old in December, James is playing on a two-year deal that becomes an expiring contract next summer. Kuminga on a three-year deal would have overlapped with Anthony Davis' prime age-32 to age-34 seasons, the window Los Angeles is actually building toward. Without Kuminga, the Lakers now have $31 million in cap space next summer if they renounce their mid-level exceptions, but that space disappears if they extend Austin Reaves early. Front-office whispers say Rob Pelinka wanted the Kuminga signing to force ownership's hand on the Reaves extension timeline — letting Kuminga walk keeps that decision open through June.

Watch whether Minnesota tries to extend Kuminga before July 2026, when his trade value peaks. If the Wolves are above .600 at the All-Star break next season, an early extension kills his trade market but locks in a playoff core. If they're hovering at .500, Kuminga becomes the piece they flip for a veteran center before Edwards' max year begins. The Lakers, meanwhile, have 48 hours to redirect that $29 million annual slot toward another wing — league sources mention Herb Jones' extension talks in New Orleans have stalled at four years, $92 million.

Kuminga's agent, Aaron Turner of Verus Basketball, also represents Jaden McDaniels, already on Minnesota's roster at $23.6 million per year through 2029. Turner now has two clients in the Wolves' switching scheme, which makes coordination easier when Minnesota inevitably explores sign-and-trade scenarios in 2027. The Timberwolves just bought two years to decide whether they're a contender or a rebuild.

The takeaway
Minnesota bought a tradeable playoff wing on a two-year deal; Kuminga bet **$23M** in short-term salary on hitting 2027 free agency under the new CBA cap.

AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
