Matt Rhule names Anthony Colandrea Week 1 starter, ends Nebraska QB competition

Transfer from Virginia gets the nod over Heinrich Haarberg as Rhule locks depth chart eight days before kickoff.

Nebraska coach Matt Rhule announced Saturday that Anthony Colandrea will start the Cornhuskers' season opener against Ohio on August 30th, ending a spring and summer competition that stretched across two transfer windows and 14 practices. Colandrea, a sophomore transfer from Virginia, beat out incumbent Heinrich Haarberg for the job.

Colandrea arrived in Lincoln in January after starting 11 games for Virginia in 2024, throwing 19 touchdowns against 14 interceptions in a Tony Elliott offense that ranked 97th nationally in scoring. Rhule brought him in to compete with Haarberg, a third-year sophomore who started 7 games in 2024 and threw 11 touchdowns against 6 interceptions but struggled with accuracy on downfield throws. The competition extended through spring ball, summer workouts, and fall camp, with neither quarterback separating until the final week.

The timing matters more than the result. Rhule is in Year Three of a $74 million, eight-year contract that reset the Big Ten coaching market in 2022. Nebraska went 5-7 in Year One, 5-7 in Year Two, and needs 6 wins to reach a bowl game for the first time since 2016. The schedule opens with Ohio, then Colorado in prime time on September 7th, then Northern Iowa before conference play begins at Purdue. Those first three games are the soft tissue before the ligament. Missing a bowl in Year Three would trigger donor conversations Rhule's staff would rather avoid, particularly with Athletic Director Trev Alberts evaluating every line item after the Big Ten media payout increased 42% this cycle.

Colandrea's Virginia tape shows a quarterback who processes quickly in RPO concepts and throws accurately on rhythm routes, but forces deep shots into coverage when the pocket collapses. That profile fits the offense coordinator Marcus Satterfield installed last season, which relies on quick game and run-pass option reads off 11 personnel. Haarberg has more arm talent but held the ball longer and took more sacks. Rhule chose the faster processor. Colandrea will work behind an offensive line that returns 4 starters and added 2 transfers from the MAC, and he'll hand off to Dante Dowdell, a sophomore running back who rushed for 817 yards last season.

The announcement ends speculation but opens a new risk window. If Colandrea struggles in the opener or gets hurt against Colorado's defensive line, Rhule has no third option with reps. The transfer portal QB market is closed until December. Dylan Raiola, the five-star freshman from Georgia, is on campus but running scout team. Rhule's decision to name Colandrea now, rather than wait until game week, signals confidence but also removes the leverage that comes from keeping both quarterbacks warm.

Watch for offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield's first-quarter script against Ohio. Colandrea's comfort level on designed quarterback runs and his accuracy on third-down crossers will show whether the spring eval holds. Nebraska's season-ticket base is watching too—renewals for 2026 open in November, and the program needs 6 wins to keep the base stable. The Colorado game on September 7th is already tracking as the highest-rated Big Ten matchup of Week Two.

Colandrea takes his first snap as a Cornhusker in 8 days. The Ohio defensive line has 3 returning starters.

The takeaway
Rhule picks Virginia transfer Colandrea over incumbent Haarberg, locking Nebraska's most important personnel decision before a make-or-break Year Three schedule.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
