What it does not measure is decision architecture—how many interviews are genuine evaluations versus box-checking, or how owner selection committees weight input from search firms (which recommended four of the 10 hires this cycle) versus internal consensus. One search consultant, speaking anonymously, said two clients this winter told him they "needed to see a minority candidate" before moving forward with a preferred internal promotion. Both conducted one interview. Both hired the internal.
The league's May schedule release will mark the start of public scrutiny on Year 1 performance for the new hires, and three teams have over-under win totals that already bake in coach-driven improvement. If those teams hit or exceed, the coordinator class they assemble by 2026 becomes the next hiring pool.
