NFL escalates Nielsen fight, names alternative metrics partners ahead of $110B media renewal

League positioning measurement optionality as Fox, CBS, NBC renewals loom in eighteen months.

The NFL confirmed this week it is formally expanding partnerships with VideoAmp, iSpot.tv, and Comscore after publicly rejecting Nielsen's Q4 2025 methodology revisions. The league did not name a replacement currency but said alternative firms will receive first-party data access starting September preseason broadcasts. Nielsen shares fell 3.2% on the statement.

Nielsen's November changes — adjusting how it weights out-of-home viewing and streaming co-viewing — produced audience variances the league called "material and unexplained." Internal NFL documents reviewed by one broadcast partner showed Sunday Night Football ratings diverging by 4-7% from VideoAmp's panel in six November games, always downward. The league's media distribution committee, chaired by Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank, sent a December letter to Nielsen requesting raw panel data. Nielsen declined, citing competitive methodology. The league stopped using Nielsen as its only ratings arbiter in January.

The dispute arrives as Fox, CBS, NBC, ESPN, and Amazon begin informal renewal talks ahead of contracts expiring after the 2032 season. Current deals total $110B over eleven years. Network executives told the league in February they would accept alternative measurement if the data were audited and contractually defined before upfront negotiations begin in May 2027. NBCU already uses VideoAmp for internal audience guarantees on *Sunday Night Football*. Disney uses iSpot for ESPN and ABC post-campaign verification. None have replaced Nielsen in advertiser-facing currency.

The league's move creates optionality but not clarity. Advertisers buying NFL inventory still trade on Nielsen ratings because agency holding companies — GroupM, Publicis, Omnicom — have not certified alternatives for upfront commitments. One global beer sponsor's media director said his team reviews VideoAmp data but contracts are written to Nielsen C3 ratings. If the NFL forces a multi-currency marketplace, brands may demand rating guarantees across all measurement firms, increasing make-good risk for networks already operating on mid-single-digit margins for NFL windows.

Nielsen's methodology changes were designed to better capture streaming and out-of-home viewing, which the company estimates now represent 31% of NFL viewing, up from 19% in 2020. The league does not dispute that growth. It disputes Nielsen's weighting model, which league researchers believe undercounts affluent, mobile viewers who watch in bars, airports, and on authenticated streaming apps. Those viewers skew 25-49 male, the demo that commands the highest CPMs. One AL team's revenue officer noted the methodology dispute is about *which* viewers are undercounted, not total audience size.

VideoAmp, iSpot, and Comscore are now receiving authenticated streaming data directly from the league's digital distribution partner, which handles *NFL+, Sunday Ticket,* and international Game Pass streams. That data was previously exclusive to Nielsen under a 2019 agreement. The firms will also receive set-top-box data from Dish, DirecTV, and participating cable operators, giving them a panel roughly 60% the size of Nielsen's 42,000-home U.S. sample. League officials told network partners the data would be available for August preseason games, creating a live comparison period before Week 1 ratings become contractually binding.

Networks are watching coordinator hires. NBC Sports recently added a VP of advanced measurement reporting to Mark Lazarus's distribution team. Fox Sports CEO Eric Shanks told investors in March the company is "prepared for a multi-currency future" but has not committed to replacing Nielsen in deals. CBS Sports chair Sean McManus said the network would follow league and agency consensus. Translation: no one moves until someone moves first.

The league's next pressure point is the May 2027 upfront, when networks begin selling $6B+ in NFL advertising for the 2027 season. If alternative measurement firms produce materially higher ratings, networks gain pricing leverage. If ratings are lower or inconsistent, advertisers will demand discounts or expanded make-good inventory. Either scenario gives the league negotiating optionality in renewal talks, which is the point.

Nielsen's contract with the NFL expires in December 2026. The league has not opened a formal RFP but is no longer referring to Nielsen as its "official measurement partner" in sponsor materials. One network research head noted the NFL is doing what it did with officials in 2019 — creating competitive tension by naming the alternative before firing the incumbent. The league replaced its officiating vendor nine months later.

The takeaway
NFL seeding multi-currency ratings market to create network negotiating leverage eighteen months before **$110B** renewal talks formalize.

AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
