Nike Signs 10 SEC Football Players to NIL Deals in Direct Investment Pivot

Six Georgia, four Auburn athletes join portfolio as apparel giant builds roster separate from school contracts.

Nike signed 10 SEC football players to individual NIL deals this week — six from Georgia, four from Auburn — marking the apparel company's most visible athlete-direct investment push since the Supreme Court opened the market three years ago. The signings follow a similar template: current starters and high-visibility prospects, each announced via Instagram Story, no dollar figures disclosed. The deals run independent of Nike's existing school apparel contracts.

The Georgia signings include defensive back Malaki Starks, linebacker Jalon Walker, and tight end Oscar Delp, all expected to declare for the NFL Draft within 24 months. Auburn's four include cornerback Kayin Lee and safety Kenyan Grimes, both starters. The deals reportedly include cash, product allocation, and social-media content commitments. Nike did not comment on structure or total spend. One Georgia staffer familiar with the arrangement said the deals are "mid-five-figures annually, renewable," placing them below Jordan Brand's quarterback-tier contracts but above the typical influencer rate card.

This matters because Nike is now building a farm system separate from its traditional pipeline. For decades, the company paid schools $3 million to $8 million annually for apparel rights, then waited to see which players emerged pro-ready. Now it signs the players directly while still in school, locking relationships 18 to 36 months before the NFL Draft. The math works if even two of the 10 sign professional endorsement extensions. The risk transfers from the school deal (paying for every walk-on's socks) to the player deal (paying for the ones who move product). Jordan Brand pioneered this with quarterback signings at USC and Michigan; Nike's main label is now scaling it to position groups.

The SEC timing is tactical. Georgia and Auburn both wear Nike on-field, so the deals create no apparel conflict and give the company clean in-game exposure. Georgia plays six nationally televised games next season; Auburn plays five. The players will post in Nike training gear, wear the logo at media day, and — critically — enter the NFL Draft already inside the Nike system. One rival apparel executive called it "pre-draft capture," noting that signing a player in college dramatically increases the odds of signing him as a rookie. "You're not cold-calling his agent in February," the executive said. "You're already in the group chat."

The competitive response is already visible. Adidas signed four Alabama players to NIL deals in March, including linebacker Jihaad Campbell. Under Armour, shut out of major SEC schools after losing Auburn last year, signed three LSU players in April despite LSU wearing Nike on-field. The校-agnostic signing strategy is now standard. The question is whether the return justifies the spend. One sports marketing analyst estimated Nike is deploying $400,000 to $600,000 annually across the 10 SEC deals, with minimal measurable social lift so far. "It's a bet on 2027," the analyst said. "When three of them are Pro Bowlers, the investment looks genius. If they wash out, it's a rounding error."

Watch for Nike to announce a second wave of signings before fall camp, likely targeting offensive skill players at Texas, LSU, and Tennessee. The company typically structures these deals in cohorts to create peer pressure and shared content campaigns. Auburn's apparel transition from Under Armour completed in July 2024, exactly one year ago, making this week's announcement a clean anniversary play. Georgia's Nike contract runs through 2027 with an auto-renewal clause tied to SEC title game appearances, which the Bulldogs have hit in four of the past five seasons. The next inflection point is the NFL Combine in February, when several of these players will wear Nike cleats in front of scouts, generating roughly 40 million impressions across sports media per player.

Nike now has NIL deals with at least 22 active college football players, per public announcements, including three at Ohio State (Bo Jackson, Jermaine Mathews Jr., Chris Henry Jr.) and two at USC. The portfolio skews toward projected early-round draft picks, defensive backs, and quarterbacks. No offensive linemen yet. The company is expected to formalize a tiered NIL structure by August, separating "brand athletes" from "product testers," with different comp models for each. One Nike affiliate noted the company is treating college NIL the same way it treated AAU basketball in the 1990s: "Find the best players early, pay them something, make sure they remember who was first."

The takeaway
Nike is building a college farm system that locks NFL-caliber players before the draft, shifting spend from schools to individuals.

AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable.
