NWSL Moves Sunday Night Soccer to Roku After Victory+ Collapse

League exits failed platform for 250M device footprint, restructures streaming around Fox anchor.

The National Women's Soccer League terminated its streaming agreement with Victory+ and immediately moved Sunday Night Soccer to The Roku Channel, placing 18-24 matches per season on a platform with 250 million active accounts. The deal closes a six-month scramble after Victory+ failed to deliver on distribution promises and the league needed a no-cost replacement that wouldn't cannibalize Fox's linear investment.

Victory+ launched in March 2024 as a joint venture between Constellation Software and Got Soccer, promising centralized rights for women's leagues. The NWSL signed for three years with no upfront guarantee, betting on subscription upside. By September the platform had fewer than 50,000 downloads, no Roku or Apple TV app, and the league invoked its termination clause. Fox Sports, which holds primary NWSL rights through 2027 for approximately 45 matches annually at $18-20 million per year, did not want Sunday inventory back—its weekend programming grid is spoken for through college football—but agreed to help broker a replacement that kept games free and didn't require the league to write a check.

Roku solves three problems. First, distribution: the channel is preloaded on every Roku device and available via web and mobile app, meaning the 200,000-300,000 viewers who watched Sunday games on Paramount+ in 2023 can find them without installing anything new. Second, production cost: Roku is taking the Fox-produced feed, so the league isn't paying for cameras or a truck. Third, sponsor exposure: Roku's ad server allows the NWSL to fulfill four in-game inventory spots it sold to kit partner Nike and banking partner Ally, which couldn't run on Victory+ because the platform had no programmatic stack. The league is not receiving a rights fee from Roku, but it's also not paying a reverse-rights fee, which is what smaller leagues typically surrender for CTV placement.

The move tilts leverage toward Fox in the next rights cycle. The broadcaster now controls the only appointment viewing window—Saturday doubleheaders—and can point to Sunday's free availability as proof the league can't command dual windows at premium rates. When Fox negotiates its 2028 renewal, it will likely offer $25-28 million annually for 60 matches including playoffs, up from today's 45, and tell the league that streaming inventory has been monetized as fully as the market allows. If a challenger like Amazon or Apple wants in, they'll need to beat that number for fewer marquee slots.

The Roku agreement runs through 2027, matching Fox's term. Sunday Night Soccer starts the weekend of April 5th, with kickoffs at 7:00 PM ET to avoid West Coast viewing conflicts. The league will announce a separate international streaming partner for territories outside the U.S. and Canada by mid-March, replacing Victory+'s failed global ambitions with a regional patchwork.

Watch whether Roku adds shoulder programming—coach interviews, a 30-minute preview show—before May. The platform has started producing original sports content around MLB and Formula E inventory to justify its $3.2 billion content budget, and the NWSL is cheap enough to be a test case. Also watch Fox's upfront presentation in May: if it promotes Sunday games as part of a "women's sports block," the network is preparing to keep all NWSL inventory in-house after 2027 and is using Roku as a farm system.

The takeaway
NWSL traded Victory+ failure for Roku's **250M** device reach, solving distribution but capping Sunday inventory value ahead of **2028** Fox renewal.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
