Patricof Co announced Tuesday it will co-invest athlete capital alongside L Catterton, the $30 billion private equity firm majority-owned by LVMH. The partnership formalizes what has been a loose conversation for eighteen months: how to connect L Catterton's consumer brand pipeline to the athlete limited partner base Patricof has assembled since 2016.

Patricof Co has spent nearly a decade acting as investment advisor to current and retired professional athletes, pooling capital into opportunities ranging from early-stage beverage brands to late-stage fitness franchises. The firm does not disclose assets under advisement, but people familiar with its roster say it includes roughly 90 active and former athletes across NFL, NBA, MLB, and international soccer. The athletes write checks ranging from $50,000 to $2 million per deal, typically as part of wider institutional rounds. Patricof takes a 2 percent advisory fee and no carry.

L Catterton's interest is structural, not symbolic. The firm has raised five flagship funds since LVMH took its majority stake in 2016, each focused on consumer brands with omnichannel distribution potential. Athlete LPs bring two assets: capital that does not demand board seats, and Instagram reach that can move product during a launch window. One L Catterton partner, speaking last year at a closed LP meeting, said the firm had tracked 14 portfolio companies where athlete social posts correlated with measurable revenue lifts in the 72 hours following. The firm did not make those companies or lift percentages public.

The partnership structure keeps Patricof as the athlete-facing entity. L Catterton will surface deals from its pipeline—brands it is buying or companies raising Series B rounds alongside its funds—and Patricof will coordinate athlete participation. Athletes invest as individuals, not through a pooled vehicle, which preserves their ability to sit out deals withoutLP majority votes. Patricof continues to collect its advisory fee; L Catterton does not pay a referral or placement commission. The arrangement is non-exclusive. Patricof can still bring athletes into non-Catterton deals, and L Catterton retains the option to approach athletes directly if a founder requests it.

What changes is the size of the opportunity set. Patricof's prior deals clustered in the $5 million to $50 million enterprise value range, where an athlete's $250,000 check moves the needle. L Catterton writes equity checks starting at $100 million and has closed buyouts north of $1 billion. Athlete capital will not anchor those rounds, but it can fill out a cap table in ways that matter to founders negotiating brand ambassador economics post-close. One Catterton portfolio company, a premium activewear label acquired in 2022, later signed three athlete LPs to multi-year endorsement deals at rates 20 percent below market, using their prior equity stakes as offset.

The timing follows two broader shifts. First, athlete compensation is rising—MLB's new CBA pushed average salaries past $4.9 million, and NBA rookie scale deals now start at $12 million over four years—which expands the pool of athletes with deployable capital before age thirty. Second, venture and growth equity deal volume collapsed in 2023, forcing fundless sponsors and solo GPs to chase LP bases that do not require ERISA paperwork. Athletes, historically treated as vanity LPs, are now being courted as real allocators.

Patricof's founder, Mark Patricof, has spent fifteen years in athlete advisory, first at CAA Sports and later at his own firm. He is the brother of Alan Patricof, the early Greycroft and Apax partner, which gives him access to institutional LP networks but also a professional allergy to being mistaken for a celebrity wrangler. The L Catterton partnership is his bid to move from access broker to dealflow principal.

Watch for the first co-investment announcement in Q2 2025. L Catterton has four consumer platforms in its current fund that are raising secondary growth rounds, and at least two are in categories—functional beverages and performance recovery—where athlete LPs have written repeat checks. Separately, Patricof is expected to raise a $50 million co-investment vehicle by mid-year, allowing smaller athletes to participate in Catterton deals at lower minimums. That fund will charge carry, marking Patricof's first move from advisory fee model to principal risk.
