PGA Tour converts Tour Championship to matchplay format in 2028, ending 17-year stroke-play finale

The first structural concession to LIV's format pressure, with broadcast, sponsor, and FedEx Cup bonus implications through 2030.

The PGA Tour will convert the Tour Championship into a matchplay event starting in 2028, ending a 17-year run as a stroke-play finale and marking the most significant format redesign since the FedEx Cup launched in 2007. Commissioner Jay Monahan announced the change Thursday without citing LIV Golf by name, though the decision arrives 30 months after LIV's debut forced the Tour into its first existential negotiation in decades.

The Tour Championship will remain the FedEx Cup decider but will feature 30 players in a bracket-style matchplay format across four days at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta. The current staggered-start structure—where the points leader begins the tournament at 10-under par—will be eliminated. Prize money stays at $75 million total, with $25 million to the winner, unchanged from 2024. The Tour has not yet announced whether matches will be 18 holes or a condensed format, though two people familiar with planning said nine-hole matches are under consideration for television pacing.

The move addresses a pressure point LIV created by accident: 54-hole team events with shotgun starts and no cut proved faster to produce and easier to schedule around NFL Sundays. The Tour's response has been piecemeal—designated events with smaller fields, a $20 million purse floor, and a Player Impact Program that paid Rory McIlroy $15 million in 2023 for social media reach. But the Tour Championship itself remained a traditional four-round event where the leader could lose because he started with a smaller cushion, a format criticized as convoluted since 2019 when Xander Schauffele won the tournament but Justin Thomas claimed the FedEx Cup under a prior points system.

Matchplay solves two problems. First, it delivers a winner Sunday evening in a head-to-head format that requires no explaining to casual viewers—NBC paid $700 million annually through 2030 for broadcast rights and has lobbied privately for schedule compression. Second, it creates elimination tension across all four days, which matters to East Lake's title sponsor Coca-Cola and to FedEx, whose $35 million annual naming-rights deal runs through 2027 and is up for renewal exactly when the new format launches. One sponsor executive said his team modeled matchplay's impact on hospitality inventory and found 18-hole matches would add $4 million in premium ticketing if structured with morning and afternoon sessions.

The Tour's matchplay event, the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play, was dropped after 2023 following 25 years, in part because it conflicted with the Masters buildup and drew weak fields. Moving matchplay to the season finale avoids that problem—players have no choice but to show up—and borrows a structure from tennis, where the ATP Finals use round-robin groups before elimination rounds. The Tour has not said whether it will adopt round-robin play for seeding, though doing so would require five days instead of four, complicating Labor Day weekend logistics.

LIV's influence appears in the decision's timing. The Tour and LIV's Saudi backers are eight months into framework agreement talks that have produced no operational merger, no schedule coordination, and no clarity on whether LIV players return to PGA Tour membership. But LIV's team format and compressed schedule have bled into Tour planning: designated events now resemble LIV's no-cut model, and the Tour introduced a $50 million International Series in Asia and the Middle East to compete directly in LIV's funding region. Matchplay at East Lake is the first time the Tour has structurally copied an entertainment principle LIV validated—single-elimination tension beats cumulative scoring for non-golf viewers.

The decision also affects the Tour's $3 billion Strategic Sports Group investment, finalized in January 2024, which created equity grants for top players tied to long-term participation. Players like Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy, who opposed LIV, now hold equity in a circuit that is borrowing from LIV's format playbook. One board member said the matchplay decision passed the Policy Board in December 2024 with zero dissenting votes, a rare unanimity that reflected exhaustion with the staggered-start controversy more than enthusiasm for matchplay itself.

The 2028 start date aligns with NBC's contract and FedEx's renewal window. The Tour has 41 months to test matchplay execution, negotiate television windows, and decide whether to extend the event to five days or compress it into a Friday-Monday window that clears Labor Day Sunday. East Lake's layout will not change, though the club is expected to add temporary structures for bracket boards and premium seating in matchplay corridors.

The Tour has not announced a replacement for its standalone matchplay event, which leaves a gap in the March schedule. Two people familiar with planning said the Tour is considering a $15 million invitational in Florida or Texas with a 36-player field, though no deal is finalized. The WGC matchplay's disappearance freed $10 million in prize money that was redirected to designated events, and the Tour is unlikely to reverse that math.

The format change does not affect the Tour's ongoing DOJ scrutiny over its framework agreement with Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, which still funds LIV. The Tour declined to comment on whether matchplay at East Lake would remain if LIV players were integrated into Tour membership under a potential merger. One agent representing four top-30 players said his clients are pricing in a 2029 or 2030 resolution, not 2025, and are treating the matchplay announcement as a signal the Tour is done waiting for Saudi clarity.

NBC will broadcast the event live across all four days starting in 2028, replacing its current Saturday tape-delay window. The network is expected to price the matchplay format into its next rights negotiation, which begins informally in 2027. One media buyer said a compelling Sunday finish at East Lake could command $1.2 million per 30-second ad spot, up from $850,000 under the current stroke-play format, though that pricing assumes Tiger Woods or a comparable star reaches the final.

The takeaway
Matchplay at East Lake is the Tour's first structural adoption of LIV's entertainment logic, timed to NBC's contract and FedEx's renewal.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
