LIV Golf Faces 2026 Funding Cliff as Rahm Wavers, DeChambeau Pivots to YouTube

PIF merger stalls; players eyeing exits as breakaway tour's capital commitments evaporate.

The $3 billion Saudi-backed merger between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf has stalled eighteen months after announcement, with Jon Rahm publicly questioning his December 2023 defection and Bryson DeChambeau telling associates he is prepared to shift full-time to YouTube content if LIV's funding collapses in 2026. The breakaway circuit's operating budget, estimated at $650 million annually by Morgan Stanley filings, now lacks firm capital commitments beyond the current season.

LIV signed 48 players to contracts guaranteeing appearance fees and equity stakes through 2028, but those agreements assumed Saudi Public Investment Fund backing would continue uninterrupted. PIF's $676 billion portfolio underwent internal review in Q4 2024 after Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman redirected capital to Neom megaproject overruns and domestic housing. Three people familiar with the fund's sports allocation say golf now competes with Formula One, Newcastle United, and the Saudi Pro League for a shrinking discretionary bucket. The PGA Tour framework agreement, signed June 2023, expires December 31, 2025 without extension mechanisms.

Rahm, who left the PGA Tour for a reported $450 million LIV contract, told Spanish media this week there was "never an argument in my mind" when he signed but declined to confirm he would remain if the tour shuts down. His agent, John Shippen Golf Management, has fielded quiet inquiries from three PGA Tour title sponsors about Rahm's availability for 2026 pro-ams. DeChambeau, whose YouTube channel generates an estimated $2.1 million annually per Social Blade data, told Fox Sports he was "completely shocked" by the funding uncertainty and has begun negotiating standalone endorsement deals that do not require tour affiliation. His 2023 LIV contract included equity in the league structure; that equity is now valued near zero by three family offices that hold positions.

Former PGA Tour board member Jimmy Dunne, who brokered the original PIF talks, told reporters this month he "wouldn't have gotten involved" knowing the regulatory and player sentiment obstacles. Dunne resigned from the board in May 2024 after the U.S. Department of Justice opened an antitrust review of the proposed merger. That review remains open with no resolution timeline. The PGA Tour has since resumed negotiations with private equity firms including Eldridge Industries and Fenway Sports Group for a domestic capital infusion that would not require PIF participation. Commissioner Jay Monahan told board members in January that a $1.5 billion equity sale to U.S. investors could proceed independent of the Saudi deal, according to two people briefed on the presentation.

LIV's twelve-team franchise model, intended to drive media rights value through team-based competition, has generated minimal broadcast revenue. The circuit's U.S. broadcast deal with The CW, signed in 2023, pays zero rights fees and relies on advertising splits. Total viewership averaged 432,000 per event in 2024, compared to 2.1 million for PGA Tour non-major events, per Nielsen data. Four LIV team owners, who invested between $50 million and $100 million per franchise, have begun discussions about selling stakes at losses. One investor told associates he expects the league to fold into a PGA Tour developmental circuit if PIF withdraws.

The PGA Tour's current negotiating position assumes LIV players will seek reinstatement under the circuit's existing penalty framework: indefinite suspension with case-by-case appeal. Rory McIlroy, a Tour board member, said in February that former LIV players should "start at the bottom" of the developmental Korn Ferry Tour if they return. That position has softened among sponsors, who see Rahm and DeChambeau as top-ten global draws. A title sponsor at a signature PGA Tour event told associates his company would consider a $15 million commitment for 2026 if Rahm returns, up from the $12 million the event currently commands.

The next inflection point is June 30, when LIV's operating agreement requires PIF to confirm 2026 funding. Three players have contractual opt-outs if that confirmation does not arrive by July 15. Rahm's agent is scheduled to meet with PGA Tour officials during the PGA Championship week in May. DeChambeau's YouTube production company has already hired two full-time editors and leased studio space in Dallas.

PIF has not commented publicly on LIV's capital structure since October 2024. The fund's governor, Yasir Al-Rumayyan, did not attend LIV's season-ending event in Miami, the first such absence since the tour launched in 2022.

The takeaway
LIV's 2026 funding confirmation deadline is June 30; Rahm and DeChambeau positioning for PGA Tour reinstatement or non-tour revenue.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
