Mario Lemieux Exits Pittsburgh Penguins Ownership After 25-Year Stake

The Hall of Famer who saved the franchise in bankruptcy now liquidates his minority position as the club enters a rebuild.

Mario Lemieux sold his minority ownership stake in the Pittsburgh Penguins, ending a tenure that began when he converted $32.5 million in deferred salary into equity during the club's 1999 bankruptcy. The transaction price was not disclosed. Fenway Sports Group, which acquired majority control in 2021 for a reported $900 million enterprise value, now holds the full franchise.

Lemieux's exit follows three consecutive seasons outside the playoffs and the quiet dismantling of the Crosby-Malkin-Letang core. The Penguins rank 28th in the league in average age this season and face $37.5 million in combined cap hits for Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Kris Letang through 2026. The club has not made a first-round playoff appearance since 2018. Lemieux, who served as chairman until the FSG sale, had reduced his day-to-day involvement after handing operational control to Ron Burkle in 2007, then to FSG president Sam Kennedy in 2021.

The sale matters because Lemieux was the last visible link to the franchise's bankruptcy-to-dynasty arc. His presence signaled continuity to sponsors, broadcasters, and the Pennsylvania political apparatus that funded the $321 million PPG Paints Arena in 2010. Without him, FSG is now negotiating a new local television deal after the collapse of AT&T SportsNet Pittsburgh in 2023, and the club's arena lease expires in 2037. The Penguins generated an estimated $285 million in revenue last season, placing them 12th in the NHL, but local sponsorship growth has flattened. The timing suggests Lemieux either wanted liquidity now or did not want his name attached to the rebuild that follows the Crosby era.

FSG's playbook in Boston and Liverpool has been patient capital deployment and brand extension. The group has already launched a Penguins-branded restaurant in the arena district and is exploring real estate development on adjacent parcels. The question is whether they continue the veteran-heavy roster strategy to preserve ticket revenue or accelerate the rebuild to align with the expiration of Crosby's contract in 2025. The front office has made no trades involving future draft capital since FSG took over, and the club's prospect pool ranks 22nd by most public models.

Watch for front-office movement before the trade deadline in March and whether FSG consolidates arena sponsorship under a single naming-rights partner. The club's local television deal will likely close before the start of the 2025-26 season, and early conversations with FanDuel and Amazon have been reported in Pittsburgh media. Lemieux's departure also removes a vocal advocate for keeping the franchise in Pittsburgh long-term, though FSG has made no indication of relocation interest.

The franchise Lemieux saved with a personal check is now worth $1.1 billion by Sportico's latest estimate. He walked away.

The takeaway
Lemieux's exit signals FSG's full control and the end of the Penguins' identity as a player-rescued franchise.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
