Seattle cuts Trevon Diggs at 53-man deadline, practice squad likely; Packers keep Sturdivant

A former All-Pro cornerback clears waivers while a rookie carves roster space in Green Bay's secondary restructure.

The Seattle Seahawks released cornerback Trevon Diggs on Tuesday, the final day before NFL rosters locked at 53 players. Diggs, 29, joins approximately 1,200 players cut league-wide in the annual personnel compression. Green Bay, meanwhile, kept rookie cornerback J. Michael Sturdivant on the active roster, a decision that pushed veteran Eric Stokes to injured reserve and opened $2.1 million in cap flexibility.

Diggs played 11 games for Dallas in 2023 before a knee injury ended his season. He signed a one-year deal with Seattle in March worth $1.2 million with no guaranteed money, a prove-it contract after two years of declining coverage metrics. Seattle's secondary now carries six cornerbacks, led by Devon Witherspoon and Riq Woolen. The team has three practice-squad spots reserved for defensive backs, and Diggs is expected to clear waivers and return on a weekly deal structure that preserves Seattle's roster flexibility through November.

The calculus is straightforward. Diggs' 2021 All-Pro season11 interceptions, the most in a decade—drove his market value to $14 million annually on his Dallas extension. But his 2023 passer rating allowed climbed to 107.4, per Pro Football Focus, and his recovery from ACL surgery left him 0.08 seconds slower in the three-cone drill at Seattle's May minicamp. Teams value cornerback speed in 0.01-second increments. Diggs lost eight.

Seattle's decision reflects head coach Mike Macdonald's preference for press-man corners who can flip hips without cushion. Diggs played 67% zone coverage in Dallas under Dan Quinn, a scheme mismatch in Macdonald's system, which ran 81% man in Baltimore last season. The Seahawks also carry $14.3 million in dead cap from Jamal Adams' release in March, leaving general manager John Schneider little room to guarantee money to veterans who don't fit the technical profile. Diggs didn't.

Sturdivant, undrafted from San Diego State, made Green Bay's roster by playing 47 special-teams snaps in three preseason games and logging a 4.38-second 40-yard dash at his pro day. The Packers kept seven cornerbacks, one more than last season, a nod to defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley's rotation-heavy approach. Hafley, hired from Boston College in January, ran 12-plus defensive backs on 34% of snaps last season, the highest rate in college football. Green Bay now has the depth to mirror that in sub-packages.

The Sturdivant decision also signals Green Bay's bet on youth over rehabilitation. Stokes, a 2021 first-round pick, played nine games in two years due to hamstring and ankle issues. His $2.1 million salary becomes available after four weeks on injured reserve, a window that aligns with Green Bay's October slate against the Rams, Raiders, and Broncos—three teams that run 11 personnel on 73%+ of offensive snaps. If Stokes returns healthy, the Packers can elevate him without cutting a contributor. If not, they've banked cap space for a November trade.

Watch whether Diggs signs to Seattle's practice squad by Friday. If he does, the Seahawks can protect him weekly and elevate him three times before a roster decision is required. If he doesn't, expect interest from Miami and the Chargers, both of whom run zone-heavy schemes and both of whom lost cornerbacks to injury in the preseason. Green Bay's next personnel move comes in mid-October, when Stokes' IR window opens and the team must decide whether to activate him or use that roster spot on a pass-rush upgrade before the trade deadline.

Diggs will play this season. The question is whether it's in Seattle's nickel package or as a midseason rental for a playoff team that needs 200 snaps of replacement-level zone coverage. The market will set the price by Week 4.

The takeaway
Seattle values scheme fit over pedigree; Green Bay bets on rookie depth and preserves trade-deadline optionality with Stokes on IR.

AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable.
