Nike adds Chloe Kitts, Joyce Edwards to Blue Ribbon Elite NIL roster at South Carolina

The program bypasses traditional shoe-deal bidding wars, locking talent early in Columbia's championship pipeline.

Nike signed South Carolina women's basketball players Chloe Kitts and Joyce Edwards to its Blue Ribbon Elite NIL program, along with three Gamecocks football athletes whose names have not been disclosed. The Blue Ribbon Elite structure launched in 2024 as Nike's first formal NIL cohort, targeting college athletes before they reach free agency.

Kitts, a junior forward, averaged 13.2 points and 7.8 rebounds per game last season for the defending national champions. Edwards, a freshman guard, arrived as the No. 4 recruit in ESPN's 2024 class and started 28 of 31 games as a true freshman. Both played key minutes in South Carolina's 38-0 undefeated season under Dawn Staley. The football signings remain unnamed but follow the program's 9-4 finish and Gator Bowl victory in December.

The timing reflects Nike's recalibration in college athletics after losing ground to Adidas and Under Armour in program-wide team deals. Blue Ribbon Elite operates independently from team apparel contracts—South Carolina's athletic department wears Under Armour—allowing Nike to sign individual athletes regardless of school affiliation. The structure mirrors professional athlete endorsements but activates during college eligibility, a reversal of Nike's historical reluctance to engage NCAA athletes directly before 2021's NIL rule change.

For South Carolina, the deals underscore Columbia's role as a recruiting closer. Kitts transferred from Arkansas before the 2022 season; Edwards chose South Carolina over UConn and USC. Both now carry Nike leverage into their remaining eligibility, a credential that matters when agents begin valuations. The women's basketball program generated $22.4 million in revenue during the 2023 fiscal year, more than all but six men's programs nationally, according to department filings. Football revenue reached $48.7 million, ranking 29th among Power Five schools.

Nike's Blue Ribbon branding borrows from its 1970s track club, which incubated Steve Prefontaine and other Oregon runners before the company formalized as Nike in 1978. The NIL version includes training access, product seeding, and social media support, though payment terms remain undisclosed. Industry observers estimate mid-five-figure annual stipends for non-quarterback athletes in the program, based on comparable Adidas and New Balance NIL deals disclosed in SEC filings.

The football signings are more opaque. South Carolina has not named the three players, and Nike's press materials included only basketball photos. That gap suggests either offensive linemen or defensive backs—positions where early NIL deals rarely generate headlines but carry long-term NFL draft relevance. One person familiar with the negotiations said the football deals were finalized after the Gator Bowl, when several juniors declared for the draft and roster clarity emerged.

What to watch: South Carolina's spring football game on April 12, when Nike apparel on specific athletes will clarify who signed. Edwards and Kitts will appear in Nike gear during the SEC tournament in early March, the first public activation. The program's next women's basketball recruiting class, ranked No. 2 nationally by ESPN, includes four five-star prospects who will face similar endorsement decisions before arriving on campus in 2025.

Nike has signed 47 college athletes to Blue Ribbon Elite since the program launched, per company statements, but has not disclosed aggregate spend or renewal rates. The South Carolina cohort marks the program's first expansion into an Under Armour-affiliated school.

The takeaway
Nike's Blue Ribbon Elite NIL program now operates inside Under Armour schools, signing athletes independently of team contracts.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
