Renasant Bank Pays $13.7M for Southern Miss Stadium Naming Rights

Deal rebrands M.M. Roberts Stadium as Conference USA program chases revenue stability after realignment churn.

Southern Mississippi's board approved a $13.7 million naming-rights agreement Thursday that converts M.M. Roberts Stadium into Renasant Bank Stadium. The deal runs through the 2037 season, paying the Golden Eagles roughly $980,000 annually for a facility that seats 36,000 and underwent $62 million in renovations completed in 2016.

Renasant, a Tupelo-based regional bank with $17.4 billion in assets and 200 branches across the Southeast, operates 14 locations in the Hattiesburg market. The naming-rights buy follows Southern Miss's third conference affiliation change since 2022—exiting Conference USA for the Sun Belt after a brief detour through a proposed merger with the American Athletic Conference that never materialized. The school's athletic department reported $32.8 million in operating revenue for fiscal 2023, landing it in the bottom quartile of FBS programs.

The per-year valuation sits near the floor for FBS stadium naming deals. For context, Troy's Veterans Memorial Stadium naming extension pays $500,000 annually for a 30,000-seat venue; Louisiana-Monroe's JPS Health Network deal delivers $650,000 per year. Southern Miss is extracting roughly $27 per seat per season, inline with Group of Five comps but well below the $75-$150 per-seat range Power Four programs command. The university needs the cash. Athletics ran a $4.1 million deficit in 2023, and conference media payouts in the Sun Belt average $2.1 million per school compared to $7 million in the American.

Renasant's previous college sports play was a $3.5 million deal with Ole Miss in 2018 for practice-facility naming at a school 90 miles north. The Southern Miss move targets a different demo: families banking in Pine Belt markets where the Golden Eagles still draw despite five losing seasons in seven years. Attendance averaged 16,200 in 2024, down 22% from the 2016 stadium reopening. The bank is betting $980,000 annually buys more household acquisition and small-business deposit flow than metro billboards, even as the program scraps for bowl eligibility.

The deal includes standard exclusivity clauses barring competing financial institutions from venue advertising and requires the university to feature Renasant branding in 75% of football broadcast shots. Southern Miss will rebrand signage by the September 6 home opener against Southeastern Louisiana. The athletic department's capital budget for 2025 lists $1.8 million in deferred maintenance on Roberts Stadium's west concourse, now covered twice over by year-one naming revenue.

Watch whether Southern Miss reinvests naming-rights cash into staff or facilities. The football program's support-staff budget ranks 11th in the 14-team Sun Belt, and the operations line item has been flat since 2021. New athletic director Jeremy McClain, hired in January from Colorado State, told the board Thursday the deal "provides essential funding for competitive progress." Translation: coordinators and recruiting staff, not scoreboard pixels. The next test is whether Renasant extends or renegotiates if Southern Miss jumps conferences again—Conference USA is already circling schools after losing six members since 2021.

The takeaway
Renasant pays **$980K/year** for Southern Miss stadium naming, funding **$1.8M** deferred maintenance as Sun Belt program chases revenue stability.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
