Taylen Green's scramble in Cleveland preseason forces 53-man roster call

The former Arkansas starter led a touchdown drive in Week 3. Front office has 72 hours to decide if he survives cuts.

Taylen Green took his first NFL snaps with the Cleveland Browns in Week 3 preseason action and produced the kind of play that makes general managers pick up their pens. The former Arkansas quarterback scrambled for meaningful yardage, extended a drive with his legs, and capped a touchdown series against third-string defenders. The film exists now. The 53-man roster deadline is Tuesday at 4pm ET.

Green entered the game late in the second half, which is standard deployment for a developmental quarterback fighting for a practice-squad spot. He completed 4 of 7 passes, moved the chains twice with designed runs, and showed the processing speed that made him a transfer target out of Boise State in 2023. Cleveland's coaching staff spent the spring installing pass concepts for Deshaun Watson and Jameis Winston. Green was watching from the back of the meeting room, taking scout-team reps, learning the cadence. The preseason window was always going to be narrow.

The Browns carry Watson at $46 million guaranteed this season and Winston on a one-year prove-it deal worth $4 million. That is $50 million in payroll for two quarterbacks, neither of whom can be cut without severe cap consequences. The third spot on the active roster was never realistic for Green. The question is whether Andrew Berry, Cleveland's executive vice president of football operations, uses a practice-squad slot to hold him through the season or cuts him loose to see if another team claims him on waivers. Green has one year of eligibility remaining under NCAA rules, which means he could theoretically return to college football if the NFL window closes. That optionality makes him less sticky than a traditional UDFA.

Practice-squad economics favor keeping him. Cleveland can pay Green $12,000 per week on the practice squad, roughly $216,000 over an 18-week season, with flexible elevation rules if Watson or Winston miss time. The alternative is releasing him and hoping he clears waivers, at which point any of the league's 31 other teams can claim him for the same $12,000 weekly rate. Indianapolis, Tennessee, and Las Vegas all have quarterback depth questions and carried four signal-callers through most of training camp. Green's agent will have worked those back channels already.

The scramble that showed up on tape matters because it is the skill Cleveland cannot easily replicate in-house. Watson's mobility has deteriorated since his suspension. Winston is a statue. If the offense needs designed rollouts or zone-read packaging as a late-season adjustment, Green becomes the only body in the building who can execute it cleanly. Offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey installed that system at Buffalo in 2022. He knows the value of a mobile third option when the playoff race tightens in December.

Berry and head coach Kevin Stefanski will meet Sunday night or Monday morning to finalize the roster. They will cut roughly 27 players to reach the league-mandated 53. Green's film from Saturday will be queued up alongside clips of backup safeties, fourth receivers, and swing tackles. The decision comes down to whether Cleveland believes another team will poach him if he hits waivers, and whether they care. Preseason performances do not carry votes in the war room, but they do shift the burden of proof.

Roster cuts are announced in waves Tuesday afternoon. Green will either receive a call from Berry's office or a text from his agent with practice-squad terms. If neither arrives by 5pm, he will start fielding offers from other teams Wednesday morning. The Arena Football League and CFL are also monitoring, though both represent severe downgrades in expected career earnings. The Browns gave him a chance. The tape exists. What happens next depends on how many front offices watched.

The takeaway
Green's preseason flash gives Cleveland a mobile third option to stash, but practice-squad economics and waiver risk complicate the hold-or-cut decision before Tuesday's deadline.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
