UNC Athletics Spends $8.2M on Kenan Stadium Scoreboard, Entertainment Overhaul

Chapel Hill bets on in-venue experience as football programs compete for recruiting edge and fan retention.

The University of North Carolina completed an $8.2 million game-day infrastructure package at Kenan Memorial Stadium, installing larger video displays and upgraded sound systems ahead of the 2024 season. The project includes corner-mounted LED boards, ribbon screens along the upper deck, and production equipment capable of coordinating live performances with instant replay feeds.

Athletic director Bubba Cunningham greenlit the spend in March, funding it through athletic department reserves and a $3 million pledge from the Rams Club, UNC's fundraising arm. The video boards measure 40 feet by 80 feet each, triple the surface area of the previous north endzone screen installed in 2014. Contractors handed over the system in late July, three weeks before the season opener against Minnesota.

The timing reflects pressure across Power Four programs to justify $70-$90 ticket prices and compete with home viewing. UNC averaged 48,200 fans per game last season in a 50,500-seat venue, down 6% from 2019. The athletic department ran a $4.1 million surplus in fiscal 2023, enough to self-finance this scale of upgrade without tapping campus subsidies. Cunningham told donors in June that recruits now tour facilities with parents who compare scoreboard quality and halftime acts to what they see at SEC campuses.

The wider implication is operational: schools with modern production infrastructure can activate corporate partnerships that demand broadcast-quality asset creation. UNC signed Learfield to a 15-year, $210 million multimedia rights deal in 2019, and the company now controls ad inventory on the new screens. Learfield's standard contract structure allocates 60% of new digital board revenue to the school, 40% to the rightsholder, creating incentive to install premium hardware.

Chapel Hill also booked country acts and DJ sets for this fall's slate, paying appearance fees in the $75,000-$150,000 range per game, according to two people familiar with the entertainment budget. That positions UNC closer to Tennessee and Texas, which have turned SEC Saturdays into festival environments, than to traditional ACC peers. The calculation: recruits notice which programs treat football like an event.

The scoreboard spend sits inside a broader $200 million capital plan Cunningham has overseen since 2014, including a $85 million basketball practice facility and a $24 million football operations center. Most of it came from donors, not debt, leaving the department with $41 million in outstanding bonds as of last June, low for a program generating $120 million in annual revenue.

What to watch: UNC explores a $30-$50 million south endzone club buildout for 2026, per two industry sources, which would add 1,200 premium seats and close the horseshoe. Cunningham meets with architects this fall. Separately, the Learfield deal comes up for renegotiation in 2034, and early performance on digital board fill rates will set the floor for that conversation.

The athletic department has not disclosed scoreboard naming rights, but three regional banks and two health systems have asked about branding, according to a person close to the talks. Standard deals in this market run $500,000 to $1.2 million annually for a 10-year term.

The takeaway
UNC's **$8.2M** scoreboard bet reflects CFP-era pressure to weaponize game-day experience in recruiting and justify ticket prices against streaming.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
