Unrivaled locks 2026 college class to NIL deals, third straight year

The 3-on-3 league is building a professional pipeline before athletes turn pro, reshaping recruiting leverage.

Unrivaled signed its third consecutive class of college women's basketball players to NIL deals, extending the 3-on-3 league's strategy of locking in talent years before draft eligibility. The 2026 class follows the same playbook Unrivaled ran in 2024 and 2025, when it secured commitments from players still competing in the NCAA tournament.

The league has not disclosed dollar amounts or the roster of signings. What matters is the precedent: Unrivaled is now the only professional women's basketball entity contracting collegiate athletes on multi-year NIL terms that bridge amateur and professional careers. The WNBA cannot sign players until they exhaust college eligibility. Unrivaled can.

This creates two immediate effects. First, it gives Unrivaled exclusive negotiating position with a subset of players before they reach free agency in the traditional sense. If a player signs a two-year NIL deal as a sophomore, the professional commitment begins the moment she leaves school, bypassing the draft-year negotiation window entirely. Second, it positions Unrivaled as the de facto brand partner during the NCAA's highest-visibility window—March Madness—when women's tournament viewership has climbed to 9.9 million on ESPN in recent title games. The league gets brand exposure during the collegiate peak without paying professional salaries.

The risk is execution. Unrivaled's second season tipped off in January 2025 with 36 rostered players and a six-week regular season. Ratings data has not been released, but the league is operating on a model that pays players equity stakes and six-figure stipends in exchange for offseason commitment. If the league cannot generate sufficient media rights revenue or sponsorship income to justify those payments at scale, the NIL deals become a recruiting expense without a return.

The competitive dynamic also shifts. Women's basketball players now have a professional option that does not require them to leave college early or forgo their final year of eligibility. The WNBA has historically been the only professional destination for American players who did not want to play overseas. Unrivaled is not replacing the WNBA—it is a 3-on-3 offseason league, not a 5-on-5 primary circuit—but it is capturing mindshare and financial commitment during the years when player value is most malleable.

What matters for team operators and sponsors is the talent aggregation. If Unrivaled signs the top 15 to 20 collegiate players each year and retains them through professional careers, it controls a pipeline that can dictate media scheduling, sponsorship exclusivity, and crossover marketing deals. The league has already signed Paige Bueckers, Azzi Fudd, and other names who drive social media engagement in the millions. The 2026 class extends that.

The WNBA has not publicly responded to Unrivaled's NIL strategy, but the league's collective bargaining agreement does not prohibit offseason employment. The tension will emerge when Unrivaled's schedule conflicts with WNBA training camp or when a player's Unrivaled equity stake creates disclosure requirements under league ownership rules. Neither has happened yet.

Unrivaled's third NIL class suggests the model is repeatable. The question is whether the league can convert collegiate hype into professional revenue before the WNBA or an international league replicates the same recruiting strategy. The next six months will show if Unrivaled's second season generates enough media value to justify year three.

The takeaway
Unrivaled's third NIL class locks college stars before draft eligibility, controlling a talent pipeline the WNBA cannot access.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
