Serena Williams and Carlos Alcaraz eliminated after USTA cuts mixed doubles to single-elimination

Format change depresses marquee entries, strips apparel sponsors of five guaranteed match exposures.

Serena Williams and Carlos Alcaraz fell in the U.S. Open mixed doubles quarterfinals Tuesday night, ending their exhibition partnership three rounds earlier than the old format would have allowed. The USTA moved mixed doubles to single-elimination this year, down from best-of-three sets with traditional bracketing. Three top-ten doubles specialists also exited in the opening two days.

The change cuts guaranteed match appearances from six rounds to four and eliminates the safety net of pool play. Williams and Alcaraz drew 18,400 fans to Arthur Ashe Stadium for their second-round win Saturday, the second-highest night session this tournament after the Gauff-Osaka women's quarterfinal. That gate is now off the table for the semifinals. The USTA cited "scheduling efficiency" in March when it announced the restructure, three months after Williams appeared at the Australian Open in a custom Nike tunnel jacket that moved 14,000 units in pre-order within six days, according to two people familiar with the SKU data.

Apparel deals for active players typically include per-match appearance bonuses starting in the round of 16 at Slams, with incremental payments for semifinals and finals. Williams' Nike contract, renegotiated in 2022, reportedly includes a $250,000 bonus per Slam final appearance across all disciplines. Alcaraz wears Nike on-court but handles his own tunnel wardrobe through a small Barcelona atelier that dresses him for arrivals and press. His mixed doubles run generated four separate social posts with tagged fits, none repeating a piece. That content library is now 40 percent smaller than it would have been under the prior format.

The format change also removes the narrative runway sponsors use to activate around deep runs. When Williams and Andy Murray reached the Wimbledon mixed doubles third round in 2019, Nike ran a capsule drop timed to their semifinal, which they never played after withdrawing. This year's compressed bracket leaves no time to produce responsive product; the final is Thursday. One brand partnership lead at a top-three sportswear company said his team planned U.S. Open activations around "four to six potential Williams match moments." They got two.

Mixed doubles has long been the format where players wear off-script pieces that don't appear in singles. Williams wore a custom denim jacket to her Monday mixed doubles presser that isn't part of any current Nike tennis line. Alcaraz's Saturday tunnel entrance featured a white linen overshirt from the Barcelona atelier, unworn since Roland Garros. These are the images that drive search traffic and third-party resale indexing, where mixed doubles content outperforms doubles by 3.2x in earned media value per match, according to a July report from Hookit. The USTA's restructure removes half that inventory.

The governing body has not released attendance data by session, but mixed doubles typically fills 60-70 percent of stadium capacity on outer courts in early rounds, rising to near-full for marquee pairings. Single-elimination increases the odds of losing those pairings before they reach a televised court. Williams-Alcaraz played their first match on Court 17, capacity 2,800, before moving to Ashe. Under the old format, they would have had two more guaranteed matches, both likely stadium bookings.

The format also changes player incentive structures. Doubles prize money at the U.S. Open pays $750,000 per team for the mixed doubles title, split between partners. That's unchanged, but the path is now higher variance. Three teams seeded in the top eight lost before the quarterfinals, including the reigning Wimbledon mixed doubles champions. Single elimination removes the ranking points cushion that specialist doubles players use to maintain tour cards. One agent representing a top-fifteen doubles player said his client is reconsidering mixed doubles entries at 2026 Slams entirely.

Williams has not announced whether she will enter mixed doubles at the 2026 Australian Open, where she last appeared in January wearing a custom Nike bodysuit that became the brand's fastest-selling tennis piece in the southern hemisphere. Alcaraz is expected to enter with Spanish partner Paula Badosa. The USTA will review format changes after this year's tournament, with broadcast partners reportedly requesting a return to traditional bracketing for 2027.

The takeaway
USTA's mixed doubles format cut halves marquee player match exposure, stripping apparel sponsors of pre-planned activation windows and content inventory.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
