Balogun's £25M Everton Deal Breaks on Deadline Day; Reyna Lands Fourth Loan Club

Monaco striker stays put after Toffees balk at wage structure; USMNT midfielder heads to Strasbourg with option clause.

Folarin Balogun will not be playing at Goodison Park. The £25 million framework Everton agreed with Monaco collapsed in the final hours of the transfer window, leaving the USMNT striker at a club where he logged 371 minutes across all competitions last season. Everton withdrew after reviewing the wage demands—north of £100,000 per week—against a Financial Fair Play position that remains underwater even after selling Amadou Onana to Aston Villa for £50 million. Monaco never dropped the asking price.

Gio Reyna, meanwhile, completed his loan move to Strasbourg, his fourth temporary exit from Borussia Dortmund in three seasons. The deal includes no purchase obligation but carries an option reportedly set at €18 million, a figure Strasbourg—owned by BlueCo, the Chelsea parent entity—can activate if Reyna logs 25 starts and the club finishes in the top half of Ligue 1. Reyna played 600 minutes for Dortmund last season, behind Julian Brandt and Jamie Gittens in the rotation. His agent fielded interest from Marseille and Nottingham Forest but prioritized playing time over wages. Strasbourg manager Liam Rosenior wanted a no. 10 who could press; Reyna's sprint metrics from the Champions League final (11.2 km covered) closed the conversation.

Balogun's stall matters because it exposes the gap between USMNT player valuation and Premier League budget reality. He scored 21 goals on loan at Reims in 2022-23, then moved to Monaco for £34 million. Arsenal inserted a 25% sell-on clause. Everton's ownership group, 777 Partners, remains in regulatory limbo; the club cannot commit to multi-year wage structures above £80,000 weekly without breaching cost controls. Balogun's camp wanted parity with Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who earns £100,000 but is out of contract next summer. The deal died when Monaco refused to subsidize wages or accept deferred payments. Balogun now faces six months in Ligue 1 rotation behind Breel Embolo and Wissam Ben Yedder, neither of whom Monaco plans to move in January. His market value resets in June.

Reyna's loan carries different risk. Strasbourg finished 13th last season and lost two starting midfielders to Rennes and Lyon. The club's BlueCo backing means access to Chelsea's medical staff and data infrastructure, the same setup that rebuilt Andrey Santos' ankle ligament in 14 weeks instead of the standard 18. Reyna's hamstring history—six soft-tissue injuries since January 2023—was the primary reason Dortmund technical director Sebastian Kehl approved the exit. If Strasbourg can keep him on the pitch for 2,000 minutes, the €18 million option becomes automatic under a clause Dortmund insisted on during negotiations. If not, Reyna returns to a Dortmund squad that will add two midfielders in the summer window and has already extended Marcel Sabitzer through 2027.

The USMNT's attacking depth now depends on where these two players are in January. Balogun has seven caps and scored his first goal in the June friendly against Brazil. Reyna has 33 caps but started just one of the last eight World Cup qualifiers. U.S. Soccer sporting director Matt Crocker attended Strasbourg's season opener against Montpellier last weekend. His flight home routed through Dortmund.

Everton will revisit Balogun in January if the club's ownership transfer to the Friedkin Group closes, expected by late November. Monaco's asking price typically drops 15-20% mid-season for players outside the starting eleven. Strasbourg's option clause triggers if Reyna hits appearance thresholds by March 15, which means Crocker will know by the March international window whether the USMNT has a healthy no. 10 or another loan returnee. Arsenal's sell-on percentage complicates Balogun's next move regardless of buyer; any deal under £30 million nets Monaco less than they paid, which they will not accept. The striker turns 24 in July.

The takeaway
Balogun's wage demands broke Everton's FFP math; Reyna's **€18M** Strasbourg option auto-triggers at **25 starts**, decision due by March.

AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
