Willie Fritz took the University of Houston job in December 2023 at a reported $2.5 million annual salary. The hire looked clean on paper—former Tulane coach, 44-24 record in New Orleans, Cotton Bowl win—but the operational logic traces back to Brenham, Texas, where Fritz spent six seasons turning Blinn College into a junior college assembly line.
Fritz went 58-7 at Blinn from 2005 to 2010, winning four NJCAA national championships. The program became a known quantity: undersized linebackers from East Texas, dismissed Power Five recruits with one year of eligibility left, and quarterbacks who needed film to reopen recruiting. Fritz ran a spread-option system that required discipline more than talent, which made it scalable. Players cycled through in two-year windows. The model was rebuild-by-January, compete-by-August, repeat.
That same structure now matters at Houston because the transfer portal operates on Blinn timelines. Fritz inherited a Cougars roster with 23 scholarship players in the portal and a quarterback room that included one walk-on. His first spring roster at UH included 19 transfers, most of them mid-majors or Power Five depth pieces looking for playing time. The offense installed in February looked like the one he ran in Brenham: inside zone, pre-snap motion, quarterback-run constraint plays. It is not coincidence. Fritz has been running the same system since 2005, which means he can teach it faster than coordinators who adjust scheme every cycle.
Blinn sits 75 miles northwest of Houston, close enough that Fritz already knows the high school coaches in Katy, Tomball, and Conroe. His JUCO tenure also built relationships with community college coaches across Texas, which matters now that the portal includes JUCO players competing for four-year spots. Fritz signed four JUCO transfers in his first Houston class, all from Texas programs. The pipeline did not require rebuilding; it required a phone call.
The Brenham legacy also gives Fritz credibility with parents of overlooked recruits. A three-star safety from Beaumont who gets no SEC offers hears "Blinn College" and knows Fritz has placed players at LSU, Texas A&M, and Alabama through the JUCO route. That narrative helps in living rooms when the pitch is development over stars. Fritz's first UH class ranked 68th nationally per 247Sports, but included 12 in-state players, most of them from regions Fritz recruited during the Blinn years.
Houston joins the Big 12 this fall, which puts Fritz in a conference where nine of the 16 programs now rely on transfer-heavy rosters. The JUCO model—short-term roster building, low recruiting dead weight, scheme consistency—maps directly onto portal construction. Fritz does not need to adjust. The sport adjusted to him.
Blinn's current coach still runs Fritz's offense, which means Houston's opponents will see the same pre-snap motion and inside-zone concepts that JUCO defenses have been studying since 2005. The difference is Houston has 85 scholarships and a $20 million football budget. Fritz now has the same system with Power Five resources, which is the bet UH athletic director Eddie Nuñez made when he hired him.
Watch whether Fritz hires a general manager for roster construction before the 2025 portal window. Several Big 12 programs now employ full-time analysts to track transfer eligibility and scholarship timing, which is Blinn roster management at scale. Also watch JUCO transfer volume in the 2025 class. If Fritz signs more than six JUCO players, it signals he is treating Houston like an accelerated rebuild rather than a traditional program build.
The takeaway
Fritz's Blinn JUCO system—fast teaching, high turnover, scheme consistency—is the same blueprint he is running at Houston in the portal era.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
