Golden State Valkyries Hit $1 Billion Valuation Before Playing a Game

The expansion franchise, backed by Warriors ownership, doubles the league's previous high-water mark in eight months.

The Golden State Valkyries are now worth $1 billion, according to Sportico's latest valuation report, making them the first WNBA franchise to reach ten figures. The team doesn't tip off until May 2025. The previous record was the New York Liberty at $530 million last year.

The number reflects the Warriors ownership infrastructure folding into women's basketball: Chase Center access, shared corporate suites, integrated sponsorship inventory, and a front-office apparatus that already runs $7 billion in NBA enterprise value. Joe Lacob and Peter Guber's group paid a $50 million expansion fee in May 2023. Sportico's methodology weights recent transaction comps, revenue multiples, and facility control. The Toronto expansion franchise, awarded simultaneously, sits at $850 million in the same report.

The gap matters for three constituencies. First, the existing twelve teams now have a reset comp for any ownership transition. Las Vegas and Phoenix both saw minority stake discussions in the past eighteen months using $400-500 million full-franchise equivalents. Those conversations restart higher. Second, corporate sponsors sizing WNBA spend now see a league where the marquee West Coast property commands $1 billion, which justifies treating Golden State inventory closer to mid-tier NBA rates than standalone women's league discounts. Third, the league's media rights negotiation for the 2026-2036 window gets a visible anchor. Commissioner Cathy Engelbert has been pitching distributors on scarcity and growth trajectory; franchise values rising 90% year-over-year in the two largest new markets gives her a board slide.

The valuation also clarifies what Lacob's group is actually building. The Valkyries share the Warriors' youth academy structure, analytics staff, and content production unit. They inherited Chase Center's premium hospitality backbone, which means corporate buyers get WNBA season tickets as part of existing NBA suite packages. That's integrated inventory, not marginal product. It's also why Rakuten, JPMorgan Chase, and Google—Warriors cornerstone sponsors—are expected to extend into Valkyries founding partnerships before the season. The franchise already announced a jersey patch deal with AI software firm Cresta in December, terms undisclosed.

What to watch: Golden State's head coach hire, expected by mid-February, will signal how seriously Lacob is treating win-now pressure versus patient development. The Valkyries hold the fifth overall pick in the April draft. Toronto, the other expansion team, has been quieter on coaching and hasn't yet announced a jersey sponsor. The league's collective bargaining agreement expires after the 2027 season; player salary cap growth will determine whether $1 billion valuations can sustain NBA-style operating losses or need to hit breakeven faster.

The valuation arrives as the WNBA enters its thirtieth season with the strongest tailwinds in league history: record attendance, Caitlin Clark's rookie impact, and private equity firms quietly sizing stakes in legacy franchises. The Valkyries haven't run a practice yet, but they've already moved the market.

The takeaway
Golden State's **$1 billion** tag resets sponsor pricing, ownership comps, and media rights leverage for the WNBA's 2026 negotiation window.

AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
