Serena Williams Takes Toronto Tempo Stake as WNBA Expansion Tests $50M Valuations

The 23-time Grand Slam champion joins Canada's first franchise weeks after Magic Johnson disclosed twelve years of Sparks losses.

Serena Williams is joining the ownership group of the Toronto Tempo, the WNBA's 14th franchise and first outside the United States, the team announced Monday. No stake size disclosed. The Tempo begin play in May 2026 at Coca-Cola Coliseum, pending renovations the ownership group will fund.

The timing is pointed. Williams' entry comes three weeks after Magic Johnson told a San Francisco conference his group has "not made a dime" on the Los Angeles Sparks since purchasing the team for approximately $10 million in 2013. Johnson's group considered selling twice—once around 2018, again during the pandemic—before the league's 2024 broadcast deals and attendance surge made holding the position rational. The Tempo paid roughly $50 million for the expansion slot in May 2024, five times what Johnson's group paid a decade earlier. Cleveland's expansion franchise, the Sirens, paid the same $50 million fee and tips off this May, one season ahead of Toronto.

The divergence matters for the 40-odd family offices and athletes circling WNBA stakes. Johnson's Sparks have generated twelve years of operating losses against a $10 million entry price. Meanwhile, the Warriors' ownership group sold the WNBA's San Francisco Shock (now Golden State Valkyries) in 2023 at a valuation north of $50 million—never having fielded a team. The Valkyries open their first season this May. Williams is betting the curve steepens from here. She joins Larry Tanenbaum's Kilmer Sports, which also owns the NBA's Raptors and NHL's Maple Leafs, plus Tempo co-owners Murray Edwards and Michael Andlauer. The group has not disclosed what Williams paid or her percentage.

What matters is the carry trade. Johnson held through a dozen years of red ink because selling in 2018 would have realized a loss. Today, expansion franchises trade at $50 million and legacy teams likely higher—the Phoenix Mercury and Seattle Storm haven't tested the market in years, but comp analysis suggests $60 million to $80 million if they did. Williams is buying at the high end of that range, on a franchise with no legacy, no fanbase data, and an untested Canadian market. Her bet is that the WNBA's new media deal—$200 million annually starting 2026, up from $60 million—plus международного sponsor interest in Toronto closes the gap between expansion fees and actual enterprise value within four years.

Rookie coach Teresa Weatherspoon, recently dismissed by the New York Liberty, was not the Toronto hire. The Tempo appointed Cameron Brink's college coach, eventually. Personnel decisions remain fluid. The Tempo will select in the 2026 expansion draft, taking one player from each of the 13 existing rosters—similar to the Valkyries and Sirens formats. Ticket deposits opened in January; the organization has not released figures. The Coca-Cola Coliseum renovation budget has not been made public, though comparable WNBA-specific builds (the Valkyries' Chase Center retrofit, the Sirens' Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse modifications) ran $15 million to $25 million.

What to watch: The Tempo will name a head coach before the April draft. Expansion draft occurs in late 2025, likely November. Kilmer Sports is expected to announce an arena naming-rights deal and a primary kit sponsor by September 2025, ahead of season-ticket sales. Williams' sponsorship portfolio—Gatorade, Nike, JPMorgan Chase—overlaps cleanly with categories the WNBA is currently negotiating leaguewide. Whether any activate around the Tempo launch will signal how serious her stake is.

The league's next expansion conversation involves Portland and Philadelphia, both cities with strong youth participation numbers and corporate density. Franchise fees will likely reset higher if Toronto's first season meets projections.

The takeaway
Williams buys WNBA's most expensive franchise after Magic Johnson disclosed twelve years of losses on a cheaper entry.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
