WTA Finals Exits Riyadh After Two Years, Returns to Indian Wells for 2026

The WTA Tour terminated its agreement with Saudi Arabia to host the season-ending Finals in Riyadh, moving the 2026 event to Indian Wells Tennis Garden in California. The deal, announced in April 2024, was structured as a three-year commitment running through 2026. The tour requested early exit. Saudi officials agreed. No buyout figure was disclosed.

The Riyadh Finals carried a reported prize pool above $15 million in 2024, the largest in WTA history, though the tour never published exact numbers. Indian Wells traditionally hosts a combined ATP-WTA Masters 1000 event in March with total prize money near $19 million split across both draws. The Finals purse for 2026 remains unannounced. Tournament owner Larry Ellison's Oracle serves as title sponsor for the March event. The same venue will now stage the tour's marquee October finale.

The Saudi deal arrived eighteen months after the WTA suspended tournaments in China over concerns regarding player Peng Shuai's safety and freedom. That suspension cost the tour an estimated $1 billion in future revenue from a ten-year China agreement signed in 2019. Riyadh filled part of that gap. The 2024 and 2025 Finals drew sparse crowds despite free admission offers and imported fan groups. Iga Świątek won both titles. Local television ratings were negligible. Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, which financed the event through its sports vertical, simultaneously expanded golf, Formula 1, and soccer commitments during the same window.

The Indian Wells return positions the Finals at a venue players publicly prefer. The facility seats 16,100 for the main stadium, runs year-round operations, and sits ninety minutes from Los Angeles without visa complications for the tour's global player base. The March event typically sells 475,000 tickets across two weeks. The WTA will now attempt to replicate that demand during an October window that competes with the MLB playoffs and NFL Sundays. Sponsorship inventory opens in a market where the tour already holds relationships with BNP Paribas and Oracle.

The Saudi withdrawal marks the second major international sports property to exit Riyadh in six months. The PGA Tour reduced LIV Golf's tournament calendar from fourteen to ten events in 2026 after merger talks stalled. Saudi Arabia retains Formula 1's Jeddah Grand Prix through 2030, the Spanish Super Cup through 2029, and Riyadh Season boxing cards with Turki Alalshikh as primary promoter. The WTA cited a "mutual decision" in its statement. Tour CEO Steve Simon did not specify whether player opposition, attendance failures, or sponsor pressure drove the exit request.

The 2026 Finals field will include the year's top eight singles players and top eight doubles teams. Qualifying concludes in mid-October. The event runs the final week of the tennis calendar, typically starting the Monday after the Shanghai Masters concludes. Indian Wells Tennis Garden will require operational adjustments to host in autumn rather than its traditional March slot, including staffing and scheduling around the venue's other programming.

Larry Ellison's involvement brings a $146 billion net worth and a history of writing checks to secure marquee events. He paid $100 million in facility upgrades after buying the tournament in 2009. The WTA Finals return delivers a second tentpole event to a venue that lost the BNP Paribas Open's traditional March exclusivity when the tour added a Miami Open two weeks later.

The takeaway
WTA exits Saudi deal one year early, trading **$15M+** Riyadh purse for player-preferred Indian Wells despite October calendar risk.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
